Chapter 13

The jury deliberated for less than four hours—a testament to the overwhelming volume of forensic evidence and the devastating clarity of Elena’s testimony. When the courtroom buzzed with the reentry of the jury foreman, the tension in the room was so thick it could be cut with a knife. Julian sat rigidly at the defense table, his knuckles stark white as he stared straight ahead at the raised walnut bench. Victoria sat in a separate holding area nearby, her face pale and drawn under the harsh fluorescent lights. Elena sat quietly in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Agent Vance and Martha, who had driven into the city to support her through the final moments.
The bailiff called the court to order, and the presiding judge stepped up to the bench, adjusting his glasses before opening the thick manila folder containing the verdict forms. "Has the jury reached a unanimous decision on all counts?" the judge asked. The foreman stood up, holding a crisp white document. "We have, Your Honor." He handed the papers to the bailiff, who delivered them promptly to the bench. The judge scanned the pages slowly, his expression remaining entirely neutral before he looked out over the hushed courtroom.
"On the first count of conspiracy to commit widespread financial fraud and money laundering, how do you find the defendant, Julian Vance?" The foreman spoke with a clear, resonant voice that echoed off the mahogany paneling. "Guilty, Your Honor." A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. The judge continued down the list of charges, ticking off wire fraud, obstruction of justice, tax evasion, and the deliberate falsification of medical records to conceal domestic abuse. "Guilty. Guilty. Guilty on all counts."
When the judge turned to Victoria’s separate indictments, the verdict was identical: guilty of conspiracy, financial concealment, and witness intimidation. Julian slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his hands as a soft, pathetic sob escaped his throat. The invincible corporate titan had been reduced to a convicted felon facing decades behind bars with no possibility of early release or parole. The judge set the sentencing hearing for exactly thirty days away, ordering both defendants remanded immediately to the maximum-security federal penitentiary without bond.

As the federal marshals stepped up to Julian’s chair to snap the handcuffs back onto his wrists, Julian slowly lifted his head. His bloodshot eyes scanned the front row of the gallery until they landed squarely on Elena. There was no anger left in his gaze—only a pathetic, hollow plea for forgiveness that came three years too late. Elena d
