Chapter 2

The ringing on the other end of the line was brief, answered on the second ring by a voice that carried the weight of federal authority. Elena kept her tone remarkably low, devoid of any tremor, speaking the words that would dismantle the Vance dynasty piece by piece. "Today, you are going to lose everything," she whispered into the phone, the sentence hanging in the luxurious air like a death sentence. Julian paused in mid-sentence, his mouth hanging slightly open as he tried to process the unnatural calmness in her voice. The stark contrast between her bruised face and her absolute composure sent an uninvited shiver down his spine.
Victoria stepped forward from behind her son, her pearl necklace clicking against the lapel of her black blazer as she narrowed her eyes. "What insolence is this?" Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "Cut the dramatics, Elena, and pack your bags. You are leaving this house tonight with nothing." Julian shook off his momentary panic, a cruel chuckle escaping his lips as he stepped closer to the sofa, towering over the mother of his child. He believed his web of corruption was impenetrable, backed by offshore accounts, bribed judges, and a media conglomerate that would bury any scandal before it saw the light of day.
"Who were you talking to? Your mother?" Julian mocked, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. "Oh, wait, she died of a broken heart because you married beneath your station. There is nobody coming to save you, Elena. You are entirely alone in this world, and this baby belongs to me." Elena did not flinch. She simply ended the call, slipping the smartphone back into the pocket of her light green dress with agonizing slowness. She looked up at Julian, her gaze so chillingly devoid of emotion that he instinctively took half a step backward.
The infant in her arms stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh, and Elena instinctively adjusted the white blanket, her touch infinitely gentle compared to the cold hostility radiating from the two Vances. "You think you own the law, Julian," Elena said, her voice barely louder than a whisper, yet it commanded the entire room. "You think your money makes you a god. But empires built on violence, fraud, and stolen lives always collapse from the inside out. And I am the one who pulled the foundation stone."

Victoria scoffed, adjusting her blazer with a sharp tug. "Delusional. The girl has finally lost her mind from the beating she took when she fell down the stairs. Julian, call security. Have her thrown out onto the street immediately. I won't have a lunatic under my roof another second." Julian nodded, pulling out his own device, fully intending to summon the private security guards who patrolled the perimeter of the estate. But before his thumb could swipe the screen, the deep, resonant chime of the front doorbell echoed through the foyer.
It was not the polite ring of a visitor or a delivery driver. It was a heavy, authoritative pounding that rattled the double mahogany doors of the penthouse. Julian froze, his finger hovering over his phone. Victoria frowned, stepping toward the arched entryway of the living room. "Who on earth could that be at this hour?" she muttered, a sudden tension tightening the skin around her eyes. Elena remained seated on the white sofa, cradling her son, a faint, ghost of a smile touching the corner of her bruised lips. The reckoning had arrived ahead of schedule.
