Chapter 9 - The Truth About Claire’s Final Night

“Keep your distance, Evelyn,” Arthur warned, his voice dangerously steady as the ocean waves crashed violently against the wooden pylons beneath the boathouse floorboards.

Evelyn let out a low, mocking laugh, her hands resting casually on the silk draping of her ruined evening gown.

“You always blamed Julian for being weak, and you always blamed yourself for being blind, but the truth is far more poetic, Arthur,” Evelyn said, taking another deliberate step forward until she was mere inches from the barrel of the gun. “Claire found the original incorporation papers of Vance Industries in your safe six years ago.”

Arthur felt the ground seem to drop out from beneath his feet, his breath catching in his throat as the terrible memory of his late daughter-in-law rushed back into his mind.

“What are you talking about?” Arthur whispered, his grip on the revolver trembling for the first time all evening.

“She found out how you and my father founded the company by framing his partner—the real genius behind the firm—and leaving him to rot in a federal penitentiary until he died of a heart attack,” Evelyn said, her dark eyes staring straight into his soul with terrifying intensity. “Claire was going to expose the entire foundation, strip you of every penny, and leave you destitute in the public eye. So I had Miller sabotage her brakes. Julian just happened to be the convenient scapegoat I used to ensure my silence and secure my inheritance.”

Miller shifted uneasily in the shadows, wincing as his wounded shoulder throbbed. “I told you we should have left the state hours ago, Mrs. Vance. You’re talking too much.”

“Shut up, Miller!” Evelyn screamed, her cool facade finally cracking entirely as years of repressed fury and calculated ambition boiled over.

Before Evelyn could lunge forward, the heavy wooden doors of the boathouse burst open with a deafening crash.

Floodlights cut through the darkness, blinding everyone inside as a dozen armed state troopers swarmed into the room, led by Chief Inspector Vance and Julian, who was pointing directly at Evelyn and Miller.

“Drop your weapons! Federal and state warrant! Nobody moves!” Inspector Vance roared, his service weapon leveled directly at Miller’s head.

Miller immediately dropped the marine wrench and raised his hands above his head, sinking slowly to his knees on the wet wooden planks.

Evelyn stood frozen, staring at the circle of armed officers surrounding her, her face turning the color of chalk as the reality of her total defeat finally set in.

Arthur slowly lowered his revolver, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the heavy burden of decades of secrets, lies, and corporate guilt began to lift from his shoulders at last.
