Chapter 4 - The Gunshot in the East Wing and the Unexpected Ally

A massive flash of lightning illuminated the shattered study window, followed immediately by a deafening crash of thunder that shook the very foundations of the historic mansion.
Arthur dove instinctively behind the heavy mahogany desk, his hand tightly gripping the heavy brass key as glass shards rained down across the Persian rug.
Footsteps pounded heavily on the balcony outside the broken window—fast, heavy, and desperate.
“Arthur! Are you in here?” a familiar, breathless voice called out over the howling wind and rain.
Arthur slowly rose from behind the desk, keeping his hand near the floorboard compartment, his eyes fixed on the dark opening of the shattered window frame.
A figure vaulted over the window sill, stumbling onto the rug and coughing violently as water dripped heavily from expensive black-tie attire.
It was Julian. His tuxedo was completely ruined, his white shirt torn at the collar, and blood trickled from a nasty cut across his left temple.
“Julian? I thought you drove away toward the highway,” Arthur said, dropping the key and rushing around the desk to grab his son by the shoulders, steadying him as the young man swayed unsteadily.
“I tried, Dad… I really tried to run,” Julian gasped, clutching his ribs as he winced in pain. “But her car… Evelyn’s driver blocked the main gate. They forced me off the gravel road down near the old greenhouse. Someone was waiting for me in the dark.”
Arthur’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury as he pulled his son toward the leather wingback chair by the fireplace. “Who was waiting for you, Julian? Was it one of Evelyn’s security contractors?”
“Worse,” Julian whispered, wiping rain and blood from his forehead with a trembling hand. “It was Miller. The former head of security whom you fired three years ago after the internal embezzlement scandal. Evelyn never let him go; she kept him on a private retainer.”
Arthur felt a cold sweat break out across the back of his neck. Miller was a dangerous, highly trained former operative with zero moral compass and complete knowledge of the estate’s layout, security blind spots, and hidden exits.
“If Miller is still on the grounds and working with Evelyn, then the entire estate is compromised,” Arthur said grimly, finally lifting the floorboard and pulling out a vintage, nickel-plated Smith & Wesson revolver—a weapon he hadn’t fired in over twenty years.
Julian stared at the gun with wide, terrified eyes. “Dad, you can’t shoot people. This isn’t a corporate boardroom, this is real life! If you pull that trigger, there’s no turning back for any of us.”
“Real life is currently trying to destroy our family, Julian,” Arthur replied coldly, checking the cylinder to ensure it was fully loaded before snapping it shut with a sharp, metallic click. “Now tell me the truth about Claire. Right now. No more lies, no more omissions. Did you have anything to do with her brakes failing?”
Julian broke down completely, burying his face in his hands as dry, racking sobs tore through his chest, his shoulders shaking violently under the ruined tuxedo jacket.
“I didn’t cut the brakes, Dad! God help me, I swear I didn’t!” Julian cried out, his voice cracking with absolute desperation. “But I knew someone who did. Evelyn showed me the proof two years ago—she had photographs of me signing fraudulent corporate loan documents to bail out my failing startup. She blackmailed me into keeping my mouth shut and signing the police affidavits ruling Claire’s death an accidental drowning.”
Arthur stood frozen, the heavy revolver feeling suddenly like a lead weight in his trembling hand as the horrifying realization of his wife’s manipulative genius washed over him.
Before Arthur could demand more details, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the hallway outside the study door.

The heavy oak door slowly swung inward, revealing a tall, imposing figure silhouetted in the dim hallway light, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at Julian’s chest.
