Chapter 14: The Final Upload

The red digital numbers on the wall clock flashed relentlessly: 00:04:15. The building shuddered as another structural charge tested its anchors somewhere deep in the foundation. Arthur Pendelton stopped ten feet away from Elena and the children, his cold, calculating smile reflecting the crimson emergency lights.
“Hand over the flash drive, Elena,” Pendelton said, his voice smooth and absolute. “You’ve played a very admirable game, but the house always wins in the end.”
Elena stood protectively in front of Clara and Leo, her hand firmly gripping the silver flash drive in her pocket. Her eyes scanned the heavy oak door of the communications room, searching desperately for a manual override panel.
“You can’t bury the truth forever, Arthur,” Elena replied, her voice steady and clear, echoing down the empty corridor. “Copies of this data are already bouncing through independent satellite relays. Stopping us here won’t save the foundation.”
Pendelton’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. He raised the electronic override device, pointing it directly at her like a weapon. “A bluff won’t save you now. Guards, take the drive and lock them inside the server room.”
Before the two tactical guards could take a step forward, a heavy iron fire axe came flying out of the adjacent office doorway, embedding itself deep into the drywall right between the guards.
Detective Marcus stepped out from the office, rubbing his bruised shoulder, holding his service weapon aimed squarely at Pendelton’s chest. “Drop the override, Arthur. Game over.”
Pendelton’s eyes widened in shock. He glanced at Marcus, then back to Elena. In that split second of distraction, Elena didn’t hesitate. She lunged forward, slamming her palm against the emergency manual release button hidden beneath the fire alarm box beside the communications room door.
With a loud mechanical click, the heavy oak door swung wide open.
Elena pulled Clara and Leo inside, slamming the door shut and engaging the internal deadbolt just as Pendelton and his guards reached the threshold. The sound of heavy fists hammering against the solid oak echoed through the room.

Elena rushed to the main console, plugging the silver flash drive into the primary satellite uplink terminal. A blue progress bar appeared on the massive monitors, climbing rapidly: 10%… 45%… 85%…
Outside the reinforced glass windows of the communications room, the night sky lit up as police sirens finally filled the streets below, cutting through the silence of the corrupt city like a beacon of hope.
