Chapter 9

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The steady patter of the rain against the windowpane seemed to amplify the ticking of the clock on the wall. Clara sank slowly onto the sofa across from Thomas, her hands trembling slightly as she reached out and pulled the manila envelope toward her.
Inside lay a series of handwritten letters—not the cold corporate memos she had seen earlier, but personal correspondence between a young Eleanor Vance and her own legal advisors from thirty years ago. The ink was faded, but the words were heartbreakingly clear. Eleanor had fought tooth and nail behind the scenes to secure a hidden severance trust for Clara’s parents, a trust that had mysteriously vanished before it ever reached their hands.
“The severance funds,” Clara whispered, looking up at Thomas with wide, disbelieving eyes. “My parents never received a dime. They spent the rest of their lives believing they had been left destitute by design.”
“They were robbed by the same men who eventually pushed Eleanor into the corner,” Thomas explained gravely. “Those same partners still sit on the Sterling board today. They have been controlling the narrative from the shadows, using Eleanor as a shield while they stripped the company’s assets for themselves.”
Clara’s mind raced, connecting the fractured pieces of a puzzle she had spent her entire life trying to solve. The cold, ruthless billionaire she had confronted in the lobby—the woman she had slapped across the face in a flash of righteous fury—was not just an enemy; she was a fellow survivor trapped in a cage of her own making.
“Why are you telling me this now?” Clara asked, her voice dropping to a vulnerable whisper. “If the board finds out you brought these documents to me, you’ll lose everything.”
“Because Eleanor is reaching her breaking point,” Thomas said, standing up and buttoning his coat. “The vote tomorrow will decide the fate of the company. The rogue directors plan to oust her, strip the foundation assets, and demolish the old mill district once and for all to cover their tracks. If you want justice for your family, and if Eleanor wants redemption, you both need to stop fighting each other and start fighting the real enemy.”

He walked toward the door, pausing with his hand on the knob. “She keeps a physical safe behind the portrait in her penthouse office. The original partnership agreement—the one that proves her innocence and exposes the fraud—is inside. Use it wisely, Ms. Miller.”
With that, Thomas slipped out into the rainy night, leaving Clara alone with the ghosts of the past and a map to the future.
