Chapter 12

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Several board members stood up at once, shouting cross-objections and demanding explanations from Arthur, who stood frozen at his chair, paper trembling in his white-knuckled grip.

Eleanor raised one hand, making no sound, yet the sheer weight of her presence commanded absolute silence in the room. The directors slowly settled back into their seats, breathing heavily, their eyes darting between Eleanor, Clara, and the incriminating documents scattered across the mahogany wood.

“For thirty years,” Eleanor began, her voice steady and resonant, echoing off the high ceiling, “I allowed myself to be held hostage by the very men who built this company on deceit. I thought that by holding the crown, I could protect the kingdom. But all I did was allow a cancer to grow within our walls.”

She turned her head slightly to look at Clara, a gesture so filled with profound, restrained emotion that it left no doubt about the alliance between them.

“Ms. Miller came to my hotel lobby seeking answers,” Eleanor continued, addressing the entire board. “And instead of listening, I met her with the arrogance of a tyrant. But that slap she delivered outside my door—and the truth she brought into this penthouse—woke me up from a nightmare I’ve been living since the day the mills fell.”

Arthur found his voice, though it cracked with desperation. “Don't listen to her! These documents are forgeries! She’s conspiring with an outsider to execute a hostile takeover of the Sterling empire!”

“They are not forgeries, Arthur,” Thomas interjected calmly, tapping his tablet. “The federal prosecutor’s office has already verified the digital signatures and the bank transfer trails leading to your offshore accounts. Federal marshals are currently securing the lower archives.”

As if on cue, the double doors of the boardroom opened, and two men in dark suits bearing federal insignia stepped quietly into the room, walking directly toward Arthur. The rogue director’s knees buckled slightly as he realized the trap had snapped shut. Without a word of protest, he allowed them to place him in cuffs and lead him out of the room, his career and empire evaporating in a matter of seconds.

When the heavy doors closed behind them, the room was left in a stunned, breathless stillness. The corporate raiders had been purged; the rot had been cut away.
