Chapter 1

The white marble stairs of the grand atrium felt like a frozen waterfall under the afternoon glare. Clara lay crumpled at the landing, her bare feet twisted unnaturally against the polished stone. The burgundy wrap dress she wore was stained with dust and faint smears of ink. Around her, dozens of crisp white papers drifted downward like wounded gulls, settling into the corners of the vast foyer. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths, every movement a sharp reminder of the long, brutal tumble from the landing above.
A heartbeat earlier, she had been running. Now, the world had narrowed to the deafening echo of her own heartbeat and the heavy, approaching thud of leather-soled shoes against marble.
Julian burst into the lower courtyard, his tailored black suit sharp against the neoclassical marble. His white shirt was pristine, though the patterned pocket square fluttered slightly as he moved with urgent, calculated strides. He did not hesitate. Dropping to his knees, his strong arms slid beneath her frame, catching her just as her eyes fluttered open in sheer terror. He pulled her against his chest, shielding her from the cold floor and the stark emptiness of the corporate hall.
Clara grabbed the lapel of his jacket, her fingers twisting into the dark fabric until her knuckles turned white. Tears hot and uncontrolled spilled over her lashes, tracing jagged paths through the dust on her cheeks. She did not weep with quiet dignity; she sobbed with the raw, guttural desperation of a mother whose entire universe had just been violently unmade.
“Please! Save my child! Please protect my child!” she cried out, her voice fracturing against the marble pillars.
Julian’s jaw tightened. He held her with absolute, suffocating firmness, his gaze locking onto hers with a chilling, deadpan intensity. Above them, standing at the top of the stairs, Elena froze in her bright yellow sleeveless dress. Her dark hair fell loosely over her shoulders as she stared down in absolute shock, one hand pressed against her mouth to stifle a gasp.
Julian looked past Clara’s trembling form, his eyes hardening into flint as he locked onto Elena at the summit. His voice was low, devoid of warmth, cutting through the vast space with terrifying clarity.

“You have just made the biggest mistake of your life,” Julian said.
The words hung in the air, heavy and absolute. Clara sobbed harder, burying her face into his shoulder, completely unaware of the political and financial gears their catastrophe had just set into motion. Julian’s grip never loosened. He gathered her fully into his arms, rising slowly to his feet while keeping his eyes fixed on Elena, who slowly backed away into the shadows of the executive hallway.
