Chapter 9: The Return to the Light

The transition from the dark, damp utility tunnels back into the sterile, brightly lit environment of Manhattan General Hospital was jarring for Leo. He flinched under the fluorescent lights, clutching the edge of his crisp white hospital gown with white-knuckled intensity. A team of nurses had gently cleaned his scraped knee, bandaged his bruised face, and provided him with warm broth and clean clothes. Eleanor sat on the edge of the hospital bed, holding his hand while Marcus handled the initial administrative hurdles with the attending physicians and hospital security.
"You're going to be just fine, Leo," Eleanor whispered, smoothing his light brown hair back from his forehead. "The doctor says you're a little malnourished, but you're strong. Just like your brother."
"Is Julian coming?" Leo asked, his hazel-green eyes scanning the doorway with a mixture of hope and apprehension.
"He's on his way," Eleanor smiled, her heart swelling with an emotion she had nearly forgotten how to feel. "I called home as soon as we got into the ambulance. The nanny is bringing him here now. I wanted you two to meet properly, without the street between you."
Within twenty minutes, the heavy doors of the private recovery room swung open. Julian walked in, still wearing his sharp dark suit from the morning, though his black tie was slightly loosened at the collar. He stopped dead in his tracks just inside the doorway, his eyes locking onto Leo sitting up in the hospital bed. For a second, neither boy spoke. The silence in the room was absolute, filled only by the quiet hum of the heart monitor and the intravenous drip.
Julian slowly walked forward, his footsteps hesitant against the polished linoleum floor. He reached the side of the bed and looked down at his twin, taking in the clean clothes, the bandaged knee, and the familiar shape of the face that had haunted both of their lives.
"You're Leo," Julian said softly, his voice full of a quiet, profound acceptance that defied his six years of age.
"Yeah," Leo replied, offering a shy, hesitant smile that mirrored Julian’s own. "You're wearing the suit from this morning."

"Mom told me everything," Julian said, turning his gaze toward Eleanor before looking back at his brother. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, polished smooth stone he had picked up in the park earlier that week. Without a word, he placed it gently on the hospital tray table right in front of Leo. "You can keep this. It's my lucky rock."
Leo looked down at the stone, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He reached out and picked it up, holding it tightly in his palm alongside the golden locket.
