Chapter 10: The Legal Storm

While the twins bonded over shared toys and endless questions in the hospital room, a different kind of battle was raging in the conference rooms of Manhattan's top legal minds. Marcus Vance had spent the entire night assembling a watertight dossier detailing Dr. Arthur Harrison’s coerced adoption scheme, the falsified birth records from St. Jude’s, and the subsequent abandonment of Leo by the wealthy adoptive family whose identities were now exposed in the confidential files.
Eleanor sat across from Marcus in a private consultation room down the hall from Leo's ward, reviewing the emergency custody petition that would legally restore Leo to her household.
"The biological father on the fraudulent adoption paperwork has already retained high-priced counsel," Marcus warned, sliding a stack of legal briefs across the mahogany table. "They realized the scandal is about to break, and they’re threatening to contest the custody reversal, claiming they still hold parental rights under the original decree."
Eleanor’s eyes flashed with fierce determination. "Rights? They abandoned him to the streets, Marcus! They left a six-year-old child to freeze in a utility tunnel while they lived in luxury on the Upper East Side. Let them try to face a family court judge with that argument."
"It won't be easy," Marcus cautioned, adjusting his glasses. "The courts are notoriously slow, and wealthy defendants have ways of dragging out proceedings for months, even years. But with Harrison’s signed confession, the DNA match we just rushed through, and the police report on the conditions Leo was found in, we have the moral and legal high ground."
"I don't care how long it takes, and I don't care how much it costs," Eleanor said, her voice steady and resolute. "Leo is coming home with me today. Temporary emergency custody can be granted by a judge on humanitarian grounds while the formal litigation proceeds."

Marcus smiled, a rare expression of genuine approval crossing his sharp features. "I’ve already scheduled an emergency hearing with Judge Sterling for three o'clock this afternoon. Get dressed up, Eleanor. We’re going to court."
Eleanor returned to the boys' room to find Julian and Leo deep in conversation, sharing a box of hospital-provided gelatin and laughing at a cartoon playing on the small wall-mounted television. Seeing them side by side, so naturally bonded despite six years of separation, reinforced every ounce of her resolve. She would tear down heaven and earth before she let anyone take Leo away from her again.
