Chapter 12: Judge Sterling’s Verdict
The courtroom was quiet, smelling of old paper and polished wood. Judge Sterling, a severe-looking woman with silver hair pulled back into a tight bun, sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, reviewing the thick dossier Marcus Vance had submitted earlier that morning. Julian and Leo sat quietly beside Eleanor at the defense table, their small legs dangling off the edge of the leather chairs. Across the aisle, the opposing legal team sat in tense silence, their clients wise enough not to show their faces in the courtroom.
Judge Sterling slowly closed the file, removing her reading glasses and looking directly down at Eleanor and the two boys.
"I have reviewed Dr. Harrison’s sworn confession, the genetic test results confirming biological maternity, and the police recovery report from the utility tunnel," Judge Sterling said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "The legal maneuverings presented by the petitioners' counsel regarding the prior adoption decree are rendered null and void by the overwhelming evidence of fraud, coercion, and subsequent child endangerment."
The opposing attorney started to stand, opening his mouth to object, but Judge Sterling raised a single hand, cutting him off instantly.
"Do not test my patience, counselor," the judge warned coldly. "Your clients abandoned a minor child to homelessness and severe neglect, effectively voiding any fiduciary or parental standing they ever claimed to hold."
She picked up her wooden gavel, the sharp crack echoing through the room like a gunshot.
"I hereby grant immediate, permanent emergency custody and full parental rights of Leo to his biological mother, Eleanor Vance, with all birth certificates to be amended accordingly, effective immediately."

Eleanor let out a long, shuddering breath, a wave of profound relief washing over her as tears of joy spilled over her cheeks. Julian cheered softly, throwing his arms around his brother in a tight embrace. Leo looked up at Eleanor with wide, disbelieving eyes, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across his face for the first time in his young life.
"You're coming home with us, Leo," Eleanor whispered, pulling both boys into her arms as the courtroom dissolved around them into a blur of justice restored.
