Chapter 9

The twin headlights of three sleek, unmarked black SUVs cut through the midnight fog, painting the wrought-iron gates of the Sterling estate in an eerie, blinding white glare. The heavy vehicles rolled to a synchronized halt just inches from where Arthur and Chloe stood over the unconscious boy. The doors swung open in unison, and six men in tactical black uniforms stepped out onto the asphalt. Their faces were obscured by dark tactical helmets, and their hands rested firmly on non-lethal suppression gear.

Arthur instinctively stepped forward, placing himself between the approaching operatives and his daughter.

“Halt right there!” Arthur commanded, his voice ringing with the full force of a billionaire CEO accustomed to being obeyed. “Identify yourselves immediately. You are trespassing on private property.”

The lead operative—a tall, heavily built man with a visible scar across his lower jaw—slowly stepped forward, ignoring Arthur’s warning. He clicked a secure comms unit on his shoulder before speaking in a flat, mechanical tone.

“Mr. Sterling, step aside,” the operative ordered, his voice echoing through the quiet street. “We have direct authorization from the oversight committee of Project Rebound to secure the asset.”

Chloe glared daggers at the masked men, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. The warmth in her legs felt like a live wire, fueling her courage as she stepped past her father to confront the tactical leader face-to-face.

“He’s not an asset!” Chloe shouted, her voice trembling with righteous fury. “He’s a child! He saved my life, and you’re not touching him!”

The lead operative didn’t even blink. He gestured subtly to the two men flanking him, who began advancing with heavy, deliberate steps toward the spot where Leo lay motionless on the pavement.

“Miss Sterling, your miraculous recovery is the direct result of a classified bio-neural transfer,” the operative replied coldly, his tone devoid of any human empathy. “The boy’s body is currently housing your paralysis. If he remains outside a containment facility for another twenty minutes, his spine will fracture permanently, and the data will be lost. We are the only ones who can stabilize him.”

Arthur’s mind raced through a frantic calculation of risks. He knew the tactical team wouldn't hesitate to use force if pushed, but he also knew that handing Leo over to the very corporation that had exploited him in the first place was a death sentence for the boy’s humanity.

“You’re not taking him anywhere,” Arthur said quietly, his hand sliding subtly toward the emergency panic button hidden within the gate’s structural pillar—a direct line to the local precinct’s chief of police. “Not without a court order.”

The lead operative raised his hand, signaling his men to level their suppression weapons.

“Mr. Sterling, you built the foundation that funded this breakthrough,” the operative said with a chilling smile. “You don't want a court order. You want this buried.”

Before Arthur could press the alarm button, Chloe suddenly spun around and dropped to her knees beside Leo, scooping the unconscious boy entirely into her own arms with surprising, unnatural strength.

“Dad... help me carry him inside the gates,” Chloe gasped, straining under the boy’s dead weight. “We’re locking the doors!”
