Chapter 13

A dark, athletic figure swung gracefully through the shattered window frame, landing with a soft, balanced thud on the hardwood floor directly behind the tactical operatives. Before the lead operative could even turn around, the newcomer struck with blinding speed—a swift, calculated sweep of the leg that sent one tactical guard crashing into the mahogany bookshelves, followed by a sharp strike to the neck that neutralized the second operative instantly.
The lead operative whipped his weapon around, but the intruder was already moving, closing the distance in a fraction of a second and slamming the heavy butt of a tactical flashlight square into the operative’s jaw. The man crumpled to the floor, unconscious before he even hit the ground.
The dust settled in the ruined study, revealing a woman in her late forties, wearing a rugged canvas jacket and heavy work boots. Her dark hair was tied back in a messy bun, her face smudged with soot and determination. It was Leo’s mother—the same woman who had left the scuffed, sparkling shoes at the front gates earlier that evening.
Chloe gasped, stepping back from the couch as she stared at the fierce stranger standing amidst the fallen guards.
“You...” Chloe breathed, her voice shaking. “You’re his mother.”
The woman didn’t waste a single second on pleasantries. She rushed past the unconscious guards, dropping to her knees beside the couch where Leo lay shivering and pale. She immediately pulled a small, modified override device from her jacket pocket and pressed it directly against the blinking red microchip on Leo’s trousers.
A loud, distinct beep echoed through the room, and the pulsing red light instantly turned a steady, glowing green.
Leo let out a long, shuddering sigh, his body instantly relaxing against the velvet cushions as the agonizing tension drained from his limbs. The unnatural angle of his legs vanished, replaced by the natural, healthy posture of a resting child.
“Mom...?” Leo murmured weakly, his big blue eyes fluttering open to look up at her. “Did we... did we do it?”
“Yes, sweetheart, we did it,” his mother whispered, her voice cracking with deep, overwhelming emotion as she pulled him tightly against her chest, burying her face in his messy brown hair. “You’re safe now. It’s over.”
Chloe watched the tender reunion, a profound mix of relief and lingering guilt washing over her. She looked down at her own legs, half-expecting the familiar numbness to return at any moment. But the warm, tingling current remained steady and strong. She could still stand. She could still walk.
“How... how did you stop the transfer without hurting either of us?” Chloe asked softly, stepping closer to the mother and son.
The woman looked up, her tired eyes holding a lifetime of sorrow, yet shining with a fierce, protective pride.
“Because Dr. Vance’s research was never meant to be a weapon, Chloe,” the woman answered, standing up slowly while supporting Leo in her arms. “She was my sister. She built those shoes to save children, not to be hoarded by a corrupt foundation board. The microchip wasn't a containment unit—it was a safety valve. All it needed was someone willing to share the burden instead of running from it.”
Before Chloe could process the staggering revelation, the heavy steel door of the study was rattled by a loud, frantic pounding from the hallway outside.
