Chapter 6

The black town car crunched softly over the gravel driveway of the Sterling estate, coming to a halt near the grand double doors. Clara stepped out into the afternoon sunlight, her posture composed and entirely unshakeable. The estate looked as opulent as ever, with its manicured lawns and towering white columns, but the exterior grandeur now masked a hollow, crumbling reality. The servants had already been dismissed, the catering staff had long since departed, and the lingering scent of stale champagne from the wedding reception had been replaced by an eerie, abandoned stillness.
Julian stood on the front steps, waiting. The immaculate navy blue suit he had worn on his wedding day was unbuttoned at the collar, his tie missing entirely, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. The effortless arrogance that had defined his demeanor was gone, replaced by a desperate, volatile energy.
As Clara walked up the stone steps, Julian stepped forward, his voice tight and trembling with suppressed fury. "Are you satisfied now, Clara? You’ve frozen our accounts, humiliated my family, and brought a multi-million-dollar enterprise to its knees over a petty argument about laundry?"
Clara stopped a few feet away, looking at him with steady, unblinking eyes. "A petty argument, Julian? Your mother looked me in the eye on our wedding day and commanded me to wash clothes like a servant, while you stood by and ordered me not to disrespect her tyranny. That wasn't an argument; that was a litmus test for my submission."
"It was a tradition in our household!" Julian snapped, his voice rising sharply. "My mother was testing your adaptability! You blew a minor domestic disagreement up into a corporate execution!"
"No, Julian," Clara corrected him, her voice calm and chillingly clear. "I simply showed you the true cost of your entitlement. You expected a wife without agency, a prop to decorate your life. Instead, you invited a forensic auditor into your financial inner circle. Every document seized by the court was generated by your own family's fraudulent business practices. I merely exposed what was already rotting beneath the surface."
Julian lunged forward a step, his hands clenched into fists at his sides, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson. "You lied to me about who you were! You let me believe you came from nothing!"
"I never lied about my background; you simply never bothered to ask," Clara replied, her gaze unwavering. "You saw an attractive woman with quiet manners and filled in the blanks with your own assumptions of superiority."

From the doorway, Eleanor appeared, her face twisted in pure malice as she glared at Clara from the shadows of the foyer. "You ungrateful, manipulative little gold-digger! You’ll pay for this! We will drag your name through the mud until no court in the country will ever look at you again!"
Clara turned her head slightly to look at the older woman, her expression completely indifferent to the outburst. "Save your breath, Eleanor. Your lawyers are already resigning, and your assets are locked in receivership. The only thing left for you to audit is your own downfall."
