Chapter 3

Morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of Julian’s penthouse master bedroom, but there was no warmth in the light. Julian woke with a throbbing headache, the remnants of wedding champagne mixing unpleasantly with the bitter taste of rising panic. He rolled over, expecting to find the bed empty, but the absolute silence of the apartment carried a heavy, oppressive weight. He sat up, rubbing his eyes, and tossed the silk duvet aside. The wedding had ended in total chaos last night; after Clara walked out into the night, the remaining guests had whispered behind cupped hands, sensing a scandal of epic proportions. His mother, Eleanor, had spent the rest of the evening furiously calling mutual acquaintances to spin a narrative of an ungrateful, unstable bride, but the damage was already visible.
Julian walked out into the expansive living room, his bare feet sinking into the plush white carpet. "Clara?" he called out, his voice echoing off the minimalist walls. There was no answer. He walked toward the kitchen, hoping to find a pot of coffee brewing, but the counters were spotless, devoid of life. Just as he reached for his phone on the island counter, a sharp, urgent knocking echoed from the front door. Frowning, Julian pulled on a silk bathrobe and strode across the hallway to unlock the deadbolt.
Standing on the threshold was Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner of the family’s primary banking partner, looking pale and deeply unsettled. Arthur did not wait for an invitation; he pushed past Julian and stepped directly into the foyer.
"Arthur? What on earth are you doing here at seven in the morning?" Julian asked, tightening the belt of his robe. "And where is your usual decorum?"
"There is no time for decorum, Julian," Arthur said, pulling a stack of legal notifications from his briefcase. "As of two hours ago, every single operating account held by your family holding company has been frozen by court order. Our compliance division received an emergency injunction citing severe structural fraud and immediate breach of fiduciary trust."

Julian stared at the banker, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Frozen? That’s impossible. Our liquidity is backed by prime real estate portfolios. Who authorized this?"
Arthur adjusted his glasses, looking at Julian with a mixture of pity and disbelief. "The filing was initiated by Vance Legal on behalf of your wife. Furthermore, the court documents designate Clara as the primary secured creditor holding senior lien rights over all corporate assets. Julian... your entire empire has just been legally seized."
