Chapter 2

The interior of Marcus Vance’s downtown office smelled of aged leather, polished mahogany, and strong black coffee. It was three o'clock in the morning, yet the high-rise windows offered a panoramic view of a city that never truly slept, mirroring the relentless energy driving Clara forward. She sat across from her attorney, the wedding dress temporarily replaced by a sharp charcoal blazer she kept stored in the trunk of her car. Her red hair was pulled back into a severe knot, stripping away any lingering softness from the wedding day facade. Marcus slid a thick manila folder across the desk, his expression grave yet carrying a subtle undercurrent of professional respect.

"You executed the exit clause precisely as drafted, Clara," Marcus said, tapping a pen against the dark wood. "The audio recording from your phone synced directly to our secure cloud server the moment you initiated the call. Eleanor’s verbal commands and Julian’s complicity are documented beyond any legal doubt."

Clara opened the folder, scanning the financial disclosures she had quietly gathered over the past eighteen months. Every offshore account, every inflated asset valuation, and every leveraged corporate debt held by Julian’s family enterprise lay exposed on those pages. "They thought they could break my spirit before the marriage certificate even cooled," Clara replied, her voice steady and devoid of self-pity. "Julian wanted a submissive wife to parade at charity galas while his mother pulled the strings behind the scenes. They forgot that I drafted the prenuptial amendments myself, including the specific penalty clauses for emotional abuse and public humiliation."

Marcus leaned back, a thin smile touching the corners of his mouth. "A clause that triggers immediate forfeiture of all shared assets upon documented mistreatment within the first twenty-four hours. It was an unconventional request when you insisted on adding it last month, Clara. I must admit, I thought you were being overly paranoid."

"Paranoia is just foresight in a high-stakes environment," Clara stated, closing the folder with a sharp snap. "Julian’s family empire is built entirely on borrowed capital and fraudulent collateral declarations. If we freeze their primary liquidity accounts before the markets open, they won't even be able to cover their payroll by Monday afternoon. I want every single corporate asset tied up in litigation before the sun comes up."

Marcus nodded slowly, reaching for his desk phone. "It will be done. By sunrise, the freezing orders will land on their corporate desks, and Julian will realize that his new bride wasn't a charity case—she was the liquidator."
