Chapter 8

Julian froze, his hand hovering over the brass lamp switch. The cabin interior plunged into sudden darkness as he snapped the light off, plunging the room into deep shadow. He crept silently toward the front window, peering out through the grime-streaked glass. The mist had grown thicker, swirling like ghostly fingers around the trunks of the towering pines.
At the edge of the clearing, a single silhouette stood motionless next to a dark SUV parked fifty yards down the logging trail. The vehicle had no license plates, and its engine was running silently, exhaust pluming softly into the cold night air. The figure held a long-barreled rifle equipped with an infrared scope, scanning the perimeter of the cabin with methodical precision.
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. They had tracked him via the toll transponder on the highway. He cursed his oversight; in the heat of panic, he had forgotten to rip the electronic tag from the windshield. Now, they were boxed in with only one exit route, and Clara was sleeping soundly in the back bedroom.
He backed away from the window, moving with absolute silence across the creaking floorboards. He needed to wake Clara and get her out through the storm cellar hatch in the kitchen, but a sudden loud knock on the front door shattered the quiet of the night.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
The heavy blows shook the wooden frame, sending dust motes dancing in the faint light filtering through the trees.
“Mr. Vance! We know you’re in there,” a smooth, disembodied voice called out from the porch. It wasn't the burly thug from the marina; this voice was refined, cold, and dripping with corporate authority. “Open the door, and let’s discuss a reasonable settlement. Continuing this charade will only end in tragedy for the child.”
Julian’s blood turned to ice. He walked deliberately to the heavy wooden door, sliding the iron deadbolt into place with a definitive click. He picked up a heavy cast-iron skillet from the kitchen counter, testing its weight in his hand.
“We have nothing to discuss!” Julian called back, his voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in his veins. “Turn around and leave, or I swear I will burn every single financial record Eleanor has hidden in the offshore accounts before dawn!”

A brief pause hung in the humid air outside. The operative clearly hadn't expected Julian to hold such leverage. The footsteps on the porch shifted, pacing back and forth like a caged predator.
“You think you can fight a machine, Julian?” the voice replied, laced with dark amusement. “Eleanor is already holding a press conference in the city, painting you as an unstable kidnapper who suffered a psychotic break at the altar. By morning, you won't just be ruined; you’ll be hunted by the entire state.”
