Chapter 10

The first gray light of dawn filtered through the dusty windows of the mountain cabin, casting long, melancholic shadows across the rustic floorboards. Julian sat at the kitchen table, staring intently at his smartphone screen. The satellite upload had successfully reached one hundred percent just before the power cut out entirely. Within minutes, his university friend had mirrored the encrypted data package across twelve independent news outlets and financial watchdog servers across the country.

Clara was still asleep in the back bedroom, wrapped safely in her blankets. Julian stood up, stretching his stiff muscles. His white tuxedo jacket was long past saving—stiff with dried mud, salt, and sweat—so he traded it for an old flannel shirt he found hanging behind the bathroom door. He grabbed his car keys and stepped out onto the porch to check the perimeter.

The morning air was crisp and biting. The tracks of the mysterious SUV were clearly visible in the muddy logging road, but they didn't lead back toward the highway—they ended abruptly at a sharp ravine two miles down the trail. Someone had tried to cover their tracks or stage a retreat, but Julian didn't care about their movements anymore. The cat was out of the bag. The digital bomb had dropped.

As if on cue, his phone buzzed violently in his palm. It was a secure text message from his friend: “It’s live. National news networks are picking it up. Eleanor’s press conference at the Sterling Estate has collapsed into absolute chaos. Reporters are swarming her lawyers.”

A grim sense of vindication washed over Julian, but there was no time to celebrate. He knew Eleanor’s desperation would make her more dangerous than ever. She wouldn't go down quietly; she would lash out like a wounded animal backed into a corner.

He walked back inside and woke Clara gently. “Pack your small bag, sweetheart. We’re going on a road trip. But this time, we’re going somewhere safe where the sun is shining, and nobody can ever hurt you again.”

The little girl blinked sleepily, a small, tentative smile touching the corners of her mouth for the first time in days. “Are we going to the ocean, Uncle Julian?”

“Wherever you want to go,” he replied softly.

They packed their minimal belongings into the car within ten minutes. Julian started the engine, steering the sedan back down the forestry track toward the main highway. As they broke through the tree line and hit the paved road, the dashboard radio crackled to life, picking up a local news broadcast.

“Breaking news this morning: Financial mogul Eleanor Sterling has refused to comment following leaked documents revealing an alleged international child custody scheme and corporate fraud. Federal agents have secured the Sterling Estate, and warrants have been issued for her immediate arrest...”
