Chapter 11

The interstate highway hummed beneath the tires as Julian drove steadily toward the regional airport three hours south of the cabin. The morning sun broke through the heavy cloud cover, bathing the rolling hills in a warm, golden light that felt entirely out of place given the turbulence of the past forty-eight hours. Clara was quietly drawing pictures on a notepad in the passenger seat, humming a cheerful tune to herself. The terrifying shadows of the marina and the mountain cabin seemed a lifetime away, though Julian knew the final chapter had yet to be written.
His phone rang continuously with calls from unknown numbers, legal representatives, and frantic relatives trying to piece together the unfolding scandal. He ignored them all, routing his focus entirely on getting Clara across state lines to his sister’s secure estate in northern California.
However, as they approached the airport’s private aviation terminal, a sleek black police cruiser sat blocking the entrance gate. Two uniform officers stood beside it, their arms crossed, alongside a nondescript federal agent in a dark suit.
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. Had Eleanor’s influence reached the federal authorities already? He slowed the car to a crawl, weighing his options. There was no turning back now; the road behind them was too exposed.
He pulled the sedan to a halt twenty yards from the barricade. The federal agent stepped forward, holding up a hand to signal a stop. Julian killed the engine, took a deep breath, and rolled down his window. The cool morning breeze ruffled his hair.
“Mr. Julian Vance?” the agent asked, his voice flat and professional as he flashed an FBI badge.
“That’s me,” Julian replied steadily, keeping his hands visible on top of the steering wheel. He glanced nervously at Clara, who had stopped drawing and was watching the men with wide, fearful eyes.
“Step out of the vehicle, please, sir,” the agent instructed, though his tone lacked hostility.
Julian unbuckled his seatbelt, whispering a quick reassurance to Clara before pushing the car door open. He stepped out onto the sunlit tarmac, the smell of jet fuel heavy in the air.
“I suppose you’re here to arrest me for kidnapping?” Julian asked, his jaw tight.

The agent let out a dry, humorless chuckle. “On the contrary, Mr. Vance. We’ve been trying to reach you for the last two hours. The data package you dropped on the dark-web servers blew Eleanor Sterling’s entire conspiracy wide open. Her offshore accounts have been frozen, and her legal team is currently cooperating with our federal prosecutors to avoid longer prison sentences.”
Julian stared at the agent, processing the monumental shift in their reality. The nightmare was finally unraveling.
