Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Archive

Stepping past the threshold of the secret closet, Arthur felt the temperature drop drastically, the air turning crisp and sterile.

He descended the narrow concrete steps, holding his phone aloft to use the dying flashlight beam as a guide. At the bottom of the stairs lay a small, windowless room dominated by a bank of glowing computer monitors and racks of heavy-duty data storage servers. Rows of flashing green and amber lights hummed in unison, casting an eerie, clinical glow across the walls.

Arthur stepped closer to the primary console, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief as he recognized the interface. It was a complete, mirrored surveillance hub, streaming live, high-definition footage from hidden pinhole cameras installed in every single room of the house upstairs, including the children's bedrooms and the master suite.

On the central screen, a timeline showed thousands of hours of archived recordings, cataloged meticulously by date and time, dating back long before he and Clara had even purchased the property.

A printer attached to the console suddenly whirred to life, spitting out a fresh sheet of paper into the wire tray.

Arthur walked over and pulled the paper free, his eyes scanning the printed text. It was a detailed activity report of his own movements over the past forty-eight hours, noting every transaction, every phone call, and every private conversation he had held outside the home.

Before he could process the implications, the audio speakers mounted above the console crackled to life, broadcasting the faint sound of footsteps running across the hardwood floor directly above his head.

"Dad?" Maya's voice drifted down through the ventilation grate, sounding distant and terrified. "Someone is trying to get in through the kitchen window!"

May you like

Arthur dropped the paper, turned on his heel, and sprinted back toward the concealed staircase, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
