Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Bolt

Inside the suffocating confines of the private office, Arthur hammered his fist against the reinforced steel door, the impact sending a dull, bruising pain through his knuckles.
"Clara! Open the door!" Arthur shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the basement. "This isn't funny! Stop playing games!"
There was no answering voice from the hallway, only the faint, muffled hum of the ventilation system and the distant, rhythmic tapping of rain against the ground-level window wells. He checked his smartphone, watching in mounting horror as the signal bars dropped from full to zero in a matter of seconds. The internal network had been completely severed, isolating him from the upper floors entirely.
Forcing himself to breathe, Arthur set the phone down on the desk and forced his racing mind to calculate every alternative exit from the room. There were no windows down here, only the high ventilation shaft that led out to the backyard garden, but it was far too narrow for a grown man to squeeze through.
His eyes drifted back to the ceramic coffee mug on the desk. He reached out and touched the side; the ceramic was lukewarm, meaning whoever had been sitting in this chair had vacated the seat mere moments before he turned the corner into the room.
A sudden, sharp metallic click echoed from inside the room's walk-in filing closet, a space that didn't appear on the original architectural blueprints of the house.

Arthur froze, his hand dropping slowly to his side as the closet door began to slowly creak open on oiled hinges, revealing a narrow staircase leading even deeper underground, into a subterranean chamber he had never known existed during all his years living in this home.
