Chapter 4: The Digital Siege

The monitor flickered to life, casting a pale, ghostly glow across Elena’s focused face. Lines of green code cascaded down the screen as the master drive began communicating with the Vance Corporation’s mainframe, bypassing firewalls and security protocols designed by the country's most expensive cyber-defense firms. Julian stood guard by the open door, his ears strained to catch any sound from the hallway above.
"Progress is at forty percent," Elena whispered, her fingers flying across the auxiliary keyboard as she decrypted the primary financial ledger. "Julian, look at this file path. They didn't just embezzle corporate pension funds; they systematically drained the accounts of the employees who worked in our old factories."
Julian’s jaw tightened. "My uncle always viewed people as disposable assets. When your father refused to sign off on the asset stripping, they fabricated the bankruptcy fraud and forced you into servitude to keep you quiet and under surveillance."
"Not anymore," Elena said, her voice laced with a cold fury that was far more terrifying than any outward display of anger. She hit a series of command keys, queuing the massive data dump to initiate a synchronized broadcast across every major financial news network and federal regulatory database simultaneously. All it needed was the final authorization code, which required a dual signature from a Vance family member.
From the hallway came the distinct sound of heavy leather shoes approaching on the concrete floor. Julian raised a hand, signaling absolute silence, and drew a sleek, matte-black keycard from his breast pocket—his own executive override token, saved for a moment just like this.
"Someone is coming," Julian muttered, his eyes fixed on the dim bend in the corridor. "Get ready to disconnect the drive if it's security."
"It's not security," a sharp, familiar voice echoed from the shadows.
Clara stepped into the dim light of the server room doorway, her emerald gown slightly stained at the hem from the damp terrace, her expression twisted into a mixture of triumph and malicious glee. She held a heavy brass paperweight in her right hand, using it to tap rhythmically against her thigh.
"I knew you two were plotting something pathetic," Clara sneered, her eyes locking onto the glowing monitor screen. "Arthur is currently wrapping up his toast upstairs. The moment I press this intercom button on the wall, twenty security guards will flood this basement and drag you both out into the street as common thieves."
May you like
Elena did not flinch. She simply left her hands hovering over the keyboard, her eyes locked onto Clara’s frantic, unstable expression. "Go ahead, Clara. Press it. But before your guards arrive, ask yourself why Julian has been downloading the family's secret Swiss bank accounts for the past three years."
Clara hesitated, her finger hovering an inch away from the intercom panel on the wall. Her gaze snapped toward Julian, suspicion instantly warring with arrogance in her eyes.
