Chapter 11: Facing the Board

The mahogany boardroom on the top floor of the Vance Tower downtown smelled of old leather, expensive coffee, and palpable anxiety. The remaining members of the corporate board—men and women who had spent years nodding blindly along to Arthur Vance’s ruthless directives—sat in rigid silence around the massive glass conference table.

When the double doors opened, Elena walked in first, wearing a sharp, charcoal-gray blazer over her white button-down shirt, her dark hair still neatly pinned in a bun. Julian followed closely behind her, carrying a sleek leather briefcase containing the restored charter documents and the federal clearance certificates.

They did not sit at the far end where the chairman traditionally presided. Instead, Elena took the central seat facing the entire board, while Julian remained standing slightly behind her right shoulder, projecting an aura of absolute, unwavering support.

"Good morning, everyone," Elena said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying an effortless authority that instantly commanded the room. "I trust you’ve all had time to review the federal receivership notices delivered to your offices this morning."

A nervous, elderly board member named Henderson adjusted his glasses, clearing his throat nervously. "Miss Vance—or rather, Miss Sinclair—we recognize that the federal investigation has... disrupted normal operations. But liquidating the executive assets without shareholder consultation violates—"

"It doesn't violate anything, Mr. Henderson," Elena interrupted smoothly, cutting him off before he could finish his rehearsed defense. "Because the original hostile takeover of Sinclair Industries twenty years ago has been legally annulled by federal courts. This is no longer the Vance Corporation. It is, as of nine o'clock this morning, fully restored to its rightful ownership."

She slid a document across the glass table toward him. Henderson glanced down at the signatures—federal judges, state prosecutors, and the newly appointed independent trustees. The color drained from his face as he realized that every legal defense they had prepared was entirely useless.

"You have two choices," Julian added quietly, his voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room. "You can voluntarily step down today, surrendering your voting shares to the employee restitution fund, or you can join Arthur Vance in federal custody while we hand over your personal financial records to the SEC."

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the boardroom. No one spoke. No one argued. The era of unchecked corporate corruption at Sinclair Industries was officially dead.
