Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass

The sound of shattering glass upstairs shattered the fragile tension in the basement. Mark bolted upright, his temporary vulnerability instantly vanishing, replaced by razor-sharp alertness. He scooped the heavy iron wrench off the concrete floor, his eyes darting toward the wooden staircase.

"Stay right behind me, Lily," Mark ordered, his voice commanding and laced with urgent panic. "Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear."

Lily scrambled to her feet, her hands trembling so violently she could barely keep her balance. The revelation about her sleepwalking, the fires, and the locked doors spun in her head like a dizzying vortex, but survival instincts instantly overrode her confusion. She grabbed the hem of her stained white dress and followed closely behind her father as he bounded up the wooden stairs two at a time.

Bursting out of the cellar door into the dimly lit hallway, they were immediately met by the sight of Elena standing near the front entryway. Her face was deathly pale, and her hands shook as she pointed toward the shattered remains of the living room bay window. Jagged shards of glass littered the dark rug, reflecting the blinking neon lights of a police cruiser parked outside on the street.

"Who is it?" Mark demanded, stepping in front of Lily and Elena, raising the iron wrench defensively.

"I don't know," Elena whimpered, pressing her back against the wall. "A man. He climbed right through the window, grabbed something off the coffee table, and ran out toward the backyard garden shed."

Mark’s face drained of all color. He didn't hesitate for a single second. He sprinted across the living room, ignoring the crunch of glass beneath his shoes, and threw open the back door leading out into the dark yard.

"Mark, wait! It's a trap!" Elena screamed, rushing after him.

Lily stood frozen in the middle of the shattered glass, her bare feet hovering inches from the razor-sharp hazards. Her eyes drifted to the coffee table where the intruder had just been. Resting on the polished wood was a single, charred object that her parents had apparently overlooked in their haste. It was a scorched cassette tape, labeled in her own childish handwriting: July 14th - The Truth.

Without thinking, Lily snatched the tape off the table. A sudden heavy pounding on the front door made her jump.

"Police! Open up!" a deep voice shouted from the porch.

Through the broken window, Lily saw two uniformed officers stepping onto the porch, their flashlights cutting sharp beams through the dark living room.
