Chapter 1 - The Broken Quiet

The hallway floorboards felt icy beneath Lily’s bare knees. Her white sleeveless dress was stained with damp dust from the dark rug, and her braided brown hair felt heavy over her shoulders. Tears tracked slow paths down her cheeks, catching the weak, yellow glow of the overhead wall sconce. She stared at the white porcelain plate resting inches from her fingertips. Carrots and overcooked broccoli sat in a pathetic little pile, untouched and cold. With a trembling hand, she nudged the plate forward. It scraped quietly against the woven fibers of the rug, sliding right up to the heavy, closed white door of the master bedroom.

Inside that room, a muffled scuffle broke out. Heavy footsteps slammed against the hardwood floor. The lock clicked violently, and the white door jerked open just a fraction.

Mark stood in the narrow gap, wearing his dark grey t-shirt. His short dark hair was wild, and his eyes bulged with a mixture of intense anger and wide-eyed shock. His chest heaved with every harsh breath.

"What are you doing out here, Lily?" Mark hissed, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed fury.

Behind him, Elena pushed past his shoulder. Her shoulder-length dark hair was tangled, and her beige blouse was wrinkled. Her face twisted into a mask of startled panic.

"Mark, stop it! Don't look at her like that," Elena whispered frantically, her hands hovering uselessly in the air.

"She shouldn't be here, Elena! She's not supposed to be awake!" Mark snarled, pointing a shaking finger down at the plate of vegetables. "Why did you bring that here, Lily? You know the rule!"

"I was hungry," Lily choked out, her voice a fragile, broken whisper. "You said I couldn't come in unless I brought the food. You said it was the test."

Elena let out a sharp, breathless gasp, pressing her palms over her mouth. "Mark, she remembers. She actually remembers what happened in the kitchen."

Mark stared down at his daughter, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He slowly lowered his gaze from Lily’s tear-stained face down to the white plate of carrots and broccoli. Something dark and unreadable flickered in his wide eyes.

"The kitchen isn't safe," Mark whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low rumble. "And neither is this hallway anymore."

Before Elena could grab his arm, Mark reached down and violently dragged the white plate inside the bedroom, slamming the heavy door shut right in Lily’s face.
