Chapter 12 - The Shadow on the Rungs

The sharp, agonized shout from the attic ripped through the quiet hallway like a physical blow. Elena shrieked, throwing her hands over her face, while Lily lunged forward, grabbing the wooden handrail of the pull-down stairs.

"Mark!" Elena screamed, stumbling up the first two rungs of the ladder before freezing in sheer terror.

A heavy thump echoed from the dark ceiling above, followed by the sound of something dragging across the floorboards. Then, a single object tumbled over the edge of the attic opening, bouncing down the wooden steps until it rolled to a stop right at Lily’s bare feet.

It was the heavy iron wrench. Its surface was smeared with dark, wet crimson.

Lily’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes tracked upward along the rungs of the ladder into the pitch-black void. A pair of heavy black boots stepped backward out of the darkness, descending the stairs with slow, deliberate precision.

"Dad?" Lily whispered, her voice trembling violently.

A figure emerged from the shadows into the dim light of the hallway wall sconce. But it wasn't Mark.

A tall man in a heavy dark trench coat stepped down onto the hallway floor. His face was half-shrouded in shadow, but the sliver of light caught a jagged, ugly scar running from his jawline down his neck. His eyes were wide and unnervingly calm, locked entirely on Lily.

"You've grown, Lily," the stranger said, his voice smooth, raspy, and deeply familiar—the exact same voice from the cassette tape. "They did a thorough job hiding you, didn't they? Making you believe you were the monster all along."

Elena backed away until her spine hit the opposite wall, her chest heaving as she pointed a shaking finger at the man. "You... you died in the fire. We saw you burn."

The man let out a low, dark chuckle. "I didn't burn, Elena. I escaped. Just like Lily is going to escape with me right now."

He took a slow step toward Lily, reaching out a gloved hand. Lily’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked back at the attic opening, praying to see Mark crawl back down, but the darkness above remained completely empty. The stranger’s fingers brushed against the sleeve of her white dress, and a sudden, blinding flash of memory struck her mind—not of a kitchen fire, but of a hospital room, a syringe, and the faces of Mark and Elena signing adoption papers while a man in a trench coat watched from the window.
