Chapter 7 - The Seismic Echo

The freezing spray soaked through Julian’s burgundy velvet shirt, clinging to his skin like ice water. He didn't let go of the wheel valve. Instead, he forced it one final rotation to the left, triggering an internal mechanical click that echoed sharply inside the concrete bunker.
Far above them, buried deep within the bedrock of the Vanderbilt estate, a heavy bell began to toll. It wasn't a church bell; it was the estate’s maritime security alarm—a relic from the prohibition era designed to signal illegal cargo landings to the harbor patrols.
Clara grabbed his arm, her fingernails digging through the velvet fabric. "You just triggered the primary coastal defense grid. Every automated turret and perimeter sensor between here and Boston Harbor is locking onto our coordinates right now!"
"Good," Julian panted, his teeth chattering slightly from the cold. "Let them lock on. The moment those sensors register an unauthorized breach from the private docks, the federal override protocol activates automatically. It’s hardcoded into the Homeland Security database from the investigations our fathers buried twenty years ago."
Marcus’s voice crackled to life from a small speaker hidden inside the emergency exit sign above their heads, startling them both.
"You're dumber than I thought, Julian," Marcus’s voice echoed, flat and devoid of any emotion. "The override protocol was updated last Tuesday. The new ping doesn't alert the Coast Guard. It alerts the private syndicate holding the mortgage on every single acre of land your family ever owned."
Julian froze, his hand slipping off the wheel valve. The cold wind howling through the open bulkhead suddenly felt secondary to the crushing weight of Marcus’s words.
"The syndicate..." Julian whispered, his eyes wide with sudden horror. "The board dissolved the syndicate in two thousand and twelve."
"Corporations don't dissolve, Julian. They just change their letterhead," Marcus replied through the speaker, a faint sound of a lighter clicking shut echoing in the background. "And right now, they own your future, your bank accounts, and the clothes on your back."
Clara stared up at the speaker, her voice shaking with rage. "You sold us out to them, didn't you? You traded the family estate to clear your own debts from the Macau casinos!"
"I traded nothing, Clara," Marcus said, his voice suddenly hard as steel. "I consolidated. And now, you have exactly sixty seconds to close that door before the automated bilge pumps flood this entire chamber with freezing seawater."

A low, mechanical rumble began to vibrate through the concrete floor beneath their boots. In the corner of the boathouse, heavy intake valves began to hiss as thousands of gallons of seawater were automatically pumped into the lower bilges to prevent unauthorized escape.
