Chapter 2 - The Crimson Stain

The wine continued to drip from the edge of the velvet sofa, forming a dark, expanding pool on the white wool rug beneath Julian’s boots. Julian spat blood onto the floor, wiping his mouth with the back of a velvet-clad sleeve while glaring up at Marcus through swollen eyes. The elderly guests had scattered like frightened crows, their murmurs dying instantly as the heavy oak front doors were blown open by a gust of freezing ocean wind. Three men in tactical gear stepped into the foyer, their faces obscured by matte-black balaclavas, carrying industrial restraint kits.

Clara scrambled backward, her silver dress rustling against the hardwood floor like dry leaves. "Dad, don't. He didn't force me into the contract. I did it to save the foundation," she pleaded, her voice trembling as she clutched the silver collar around her throat.

Marcus didn't look at her. His gaze remained fixed on Julian, who was struggling to sit upright on the wine-soaked cushions. The tattoos on Marcus’s knuckles flexed as he rolled his shoulders, the pinstripe fabric stretching tightly across his broad frame.

"The foundation doesn't need saving, Clara. It needs burying, just like your mother’s secrets," Marcus said coldly. He turned his head slightly toward the doorway where the tactical team waited in silence. "Clear the perimeter. Nobody leaves this room until I have the ledger."

Julian wiped the blood from his lip, letting out a wet, mocking chuckle. "You think a code black scares me, Marcus? The federal prosecutor already has a copy of the ledger. If I don't check in by midnight, automated servers drop the encryption keys to every news outlet from Boston to New York."

Marcus froze. The silence in the mansion grew heavy, broken only by the distant crashing of waves against the cliffs outside. For a fraction of a second, a muscle twitched near Marcus’s left eye—the only sign that Julian’s words had found their mark.

"You bluff like your father," Marcus said quietly, stepping closer until his shadow fell completely over Julian. "And your father died believing he was untouchable, right up until the moment his brakes failed on Route 9."

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "You... you didn't."

Marcus slowly turned his head to look down at his daughter, his expression unreadable. "I didn't have to, Clara. People with secrets always find a way to destroy themselves."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, tossing it onto the floor between Julian’s boots.

"Look inside," Marcus commanded softly. "That’s what your digital insurance policy bought you."

Julian’s shaking fingers reached down and picked up the drive, sliding the metal casing back to reveal a blank memory sector. His face went completely pale.
