Chapter 1 - The First Strike

The crystal chandelier above the Vanderbilo mansion’s grand living room hummed with static, vibrating against the high arched windows that looked out over the freezing Massachusetts coast. Julian stood frozen, his fingers still wrapped tightly around the leather lead attached to Clara’s silver collar. Clara, her blonde hair pulled back in a severe knot, knelt on the imported Persian rug, her chest heaving as silent tears tracked through the dusting of powder on her cheeks.
Marcus stepped through the double mahogany doors, his pinstriped suit immaculate, the heavy ink of prison-style tattoos crawling up his neck and wrapping around his scarred knuckles. He didn't blink. He raised the heavy military-grade walkie-talkie to his lips, his voice dropping an octave into the cold air.
"Drop it. Stay out of—" Marcus started, his tone clipped, but Julian sneered, tightening his grip on the leather.
"Stay out of what, Marcus? She signed the emancipation papers. She’s legally bound to my custody for the next seventy-two hours," Julian snapped, his voice cracking slightly with nervous bravado. He wore a deep burgundy velvet shirt that caught the amber light, his fingers adorned with heavy silver rings that clinked against the brass buckle of the leash.
"She is my blood," Marcus said, his voice flat, devoid of any warmth. "And nobody plays games with a Vanderbilt in my house."
"Your house?" Julian laughed bitterly, stepping back. "You built this empire on stolen government contracts and quiet graves. Don't act like a patriarch now."
Without warning, Marcus exploded into motion. His fist connected with Julian’s jaw with a sickening crunch of cartilage. The impact sent the young man flying backward into a velvet sofa where several elderly family guests sat clutching crystal wine glasses of Cabernet. Red wine splashed across expensive upholstery like fresh blood as Julian groaned, collapsing onto the imported cushions.
Marcus didn't check on Julian. Instead, he dropped to his knees beside Clara, his rough, tattooed hand reaching out to gently cup her tear-stained cheek. His thumb brushed away a tear with surprising tenderness, though his eyes remained dead and calculating.
"You hit my daughter? My family owns this town," Marcus whispered, his face inches from hers.
He rose swiftly, pressing the walkie-talkie directly to his mouth. His expression twisted into something terrifyingly stern and dangerous.
"You're done. Code black, all three."
Marcus stared intensely into the hidden security lens mounted near the crown molding, his gaze locked directly onto the live feed recording every second.
"You picked the wrong family," he muttered to the glass.

Outside, the heavy iron gates of the estate groaned as a fleet of unmarked black SUVs tore up the gravel driveway.
