Chapter 6: The Uninvited Guest at the Gates

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the iron gates of the Vance estate, turning the damp gravel of the driveway into a shimmering mirage. Elena was seated in the sunroom, nursing a cup of green tea while reviewing the draft of her upcoming public statement with David Miller, when the low rumble of a high-performance engine broke the quiet afternoon serenity. A sleek silver sports car pulled up hard against the outer security barrier, its horn blaring a harsh, demanding rhythm that echoed off the stone walls of the mansion.
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Elena watched as Julian stepped out of the vehicle. He was still wearing the white dress shirt from the previous night, though the sleeves were rolled up haphazardly and his tie was gone, revealing a man pushed to the absolute brink of desperation. He looked disheveled, a stark contrast to the immaculate corporate titan he usually projected to the world.
Two of Arthur’s private bodyguards immediately converged on him, blocking his path before he could even reach the intercom system. Julian shouted something furious, gesturing wildly toward the house, his face twisted in an ugly grimace of rage and disbelief.
"Shall I have them remove him from the property, Ms. Vance?" David asked calmly, not even bothering to look up from his legal briefs.
"No," Elena said, her voice chillingly quiet. She set her teacup down on the saucer with deliberate care. "Let him in. Or rather, let him speak to the intercom. It’s time he learns that he no longer has the right to cross this threshold."
She stood up, smoothing the front of her beige trousers, and walked over to the integrated intercom panel mounted beside the door. Pressing the activation button, her voice projected clearly through the exterior speaker system out at the front gates.
"You're trespassing, Julian," Elena said, her tone entirely devoid of the fear that once defined their interactions.
The audio feed hissed with static before Julian’s voice crackled back, thick with fury and disbelief. "Elena! Open these damn gates right now! Do you have any idea what your father has done? The board is in absolute chaos, the federal investigators are seizing the downtown servers, and my entire career is hanging by a thread because of a family tantrum!"
"Your career?" Elena repeated, her voice carrying a sharp, cutting edge that silenced him instantly. "You embezzled millions of dollars in research capital, forged my signature on federal documents, and thought you could physically abuse me into silence whenever things didn't go your way. You did this to yourself, Julian."
"That is a lie!" Julian shouted back, his voice cracking with desperation as the bodyguards closed in around him. "We can fix this inside the house! Just talk to me like a husband. Drop the injunctions, and we can issue a joint statement about personal stress!"

"There is no 'we' anymore," Elena replied firmly. "The only thing you will be discussing from now on is with federal prosecutors and our divorce attorneys. Turn around and leave before my father has you arrested for trespassing."
She released the button, cutting off the audio feed entirely. Through the glass, she watched Julian slam his fist against the metal gate in a futile display of rage before stumbling back toward his sports car with defeated, heavy steps.
