Chapter 8

The grand chandelier cast a brilliant, crystal-clear light over the marble foyer as Martha stepped inside. Standing by the base of the sweeping staircase was Clara, holding a small leather-bound ledger. She was not packing. She was not hiding. She looked entirely at ease, waiting.
"Going somewhere, Martha?" Clara asked, her voice echoing softly off the high ceilings.
Martha stopped dead in her tracks, lifting her chin with aristocratic defiance. "You can play corporate games all you want with Arthur and invite your vulture friends like Eleanor Sterling into my home, but it ends here. Harrison is filing an emergency injunction as we speak. By tomorrow morning, a judge will freeze every asset you think you’ve acquired."
Clara closed the ledger with a quiet snap. "Harrison Vance? The same cousin who has been quietly funneling subsidiary dividends into off-shore accounts for the past three years?"
Martha’s composure flickered for a fraction of a second, her eyes widening slightly before she recovered her icy glare. "You’re bluffing. You have no access to those records."
"I don't need access to them anymore, Martha," Clara replied, walking slowly toward her. "Because I already handed those financial trails over to the federal securities oversight committee at noon today."
The air left Martha’s lungs as if she had been struck physically in the chest. She took a half-step backward, her leather heels clicking sharply against the marble. "You... you went to federal regulators?"
"When you play dirty, you invite federal oversight," Clara said calmly, stopping just a few feet away from the older woman. "For six years, I watched this family operate above the law, destroying businesses, ruining competitors, and treating people like disposable assets. Arthur gave me the legal opening to take the estate, but you and Harrison gave me the justification to dismantle the entire operation."
"You are destroying a family legacy!" Martha shouted, the veneer of aristocratic calm finally shattering completely, her voice cracking with desperate rage.
"No, Martha," Clara said, her voice steady and resolute, carrying the weight of unshakeable truth. "I am simply holding you accountable for the wreckage you left behind."
Before Martha could formulate a response, the heavy front doors swung open once more. Marcus Vance strode into the foyer, looking frantic, his phone pressed against his ear. He stopped when he saw his mother and Clara standing face-to-face in the center of the room.

"Mother," Marcus said breathlessly, lowering his phone. "The board just received an emergency notification. The SEC has frozen all corporate accounts pending a forensic audit of the subsidiary dividends."
Martha slowly turned her head to look at her younger son, the color entirely draining from her face. The empire was collapsing in real-time.
