Chapter 10

While Martha and Marcus argued in the foyer, the side door from the garage clicked open. Arthur walked slowly into the house. He looked like a ghost of the man who had slammed his hand on the kitchen island just twenty-four hours earlier. His suit jacket was gone, his shirt sleeves were rolled up, and his shoulders were hopelessly slumped. He walked past the grand staircase, ignoring his mother and brother entirely, and stopped a few feet from Clara.

"The board just ousted me," Arthur said, his voice flat, devoid of any remaining inflection. "Marcus and I have been stripped of our executive titles. The emergency meeting concluded ten minutes ago."

Martha stopped arguing with Marcus and spun around, staring at her eldest son in utter horror. "Ousted? They can't oust you! Your father founded this corporation!"

"My father built it, Martha, and we systematically looted it," Arthur said, his voice cracking slightly as he looked directly into Clara’s eyes. He didn't look angry anymore; the fury had burned out, leaving behind only hollow defeat. "Arthur Vance Enterprises is gone. The name is being removed from the building as we speak."

Clara looked at him with steady, compassionate neutrality. She did not gloat, nor did she offer false comfort. "You had every opportunity to change course, Arthur. You chose protection over integrity."

"I know," Arthur whispered, his knees trembling slightly as he leaned against the mahogany console table. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, traditional silver key—the master key to the estate gates. He placed it slowly, deliberately, on the surface of the table. "You were right about the thirty days, Clara. But you won't need them. I’m leaving tonight."

Martha let out a strangled gasp, stepping toward Arthur as if to physically shake him back to his senses. "You cannot leave! You are a Vance! We do not run away from our own home!"

"There is no home left, Mother," Arthur said softly, turning his tired eyes toward her. "There is only an empty house built on lies."

Clara watched the scene unfold with quiet resolve. She picked up the silver key from the table, sliding it gently into her pocket. The eviction notice Arthur had so arrogantly thrown in her face twenty-four hours ago had come full circle, but the one walking out into the cold night was not the woman in the gray coat.
