Chapter 6

The fire crackled softly in the library hearth, casting a warm amber glow over the Persian rug. Clara stared at Eleanor Sterling, weighing the proposition with the cool, analytical detachment that had defined her entire career before she met Arthur.

"Why would you help me, Eleanor?" Clara asked directly. "The Sterlings and the Vances have been corporate rivals for decades. Handing a controlling stake of Vance Enterprises to me isn't just an alliance; it’s a hostile takeover disguised as charity."

Eleanor chuckled, a dry, papery sound devoid of real humor. "Charity is for the church, Clara. This is simply good business. Arthur and Marcus have run that company into the ground through sheer arrogance and reckless speculation. They treat a multi-million-dollar enterprise like a personal piggy bank. The market needs stability, and the Vance board needs adults in the room. You have the intellect, the paperwork, and now, the legal standing. I simply have the capital to accelerate the inevitable."

Clara nodded slowly. "If I accept your shares, Marcus and Arthur won't just try to discredit me legally. They will try to find every personal vulnerability I have."

"Do you have any left?" Eleanor asked gently, her sharp eyes softening just a fraction. "You survived six years under Martha’s roof and Arthur’s thumb without losing your mind or your integrity. I doubt a few manufactured gossip columns will break your stride."

"They won't," Clara said softly, standing up to walk over to the window. Outside, the gardener was trimming the boxwood hedges, completely unaware of the tectonic shifts happening inside the mansion. "Let’s review the terms of the share transfer. If we do this, it needs to be executed before the stock market opens on Monday morning."

Eleanor pulled a sleek leather folio from her emerald coat and placed it on the oak desk. "Already anticipated your thoroughness. All terms are outlined here. Full voting rights, operational restructuring authority, and zero interference from external stakeholders."

Clara opened the folio, scanning the legal clauses with practiced speed. Every detail was accounted for. It was a masterpiece of corporate strategy.

As they finalized the details, the heavy oak door of the library swung open without warning. Arthur stood in the doorway, his tie ripped off completely, his hair wild and disheveled. He froze when he saw Eleanor Sterling sitting by the fireplace.

"Eleanor?" Arthur stammered, his brain struggling to process the visual data. "What are you doing here? This is a private residence!"

"Not anymore, Arthur," Eleanor replied smoothly, not even bothering to stand up. "According to the documents your wife so kindly invited me to review, I believe I am looking at my future corporate landlord."

Arthur’s face drained of all color. He looked from Eleanor to Clara, his chest heaving as reality finally crashed down upon him with the force of a tidal wave. "You’re conspiring with them," Arthur whispered, pointing a shaking finger at Clara. "You planned this all along."

"No, Arthur," Clara said, turning away from the window to face him squarely, her voice calm and absolute. "I simply waited for you to hand me the rope."
