Chapter 7 - The Access Hatch

The heavy metallic clanging above the elevator ceiling sent a fresh wave of panic through the trapped occupants. Eleanor stumbled back against the rolling hospital bed, while Marcus Vance instinctively raised his arms to shield his head, his corporate veneer completely shattered by the unpredictability of the situation.

"Who's up there?" the security guard demanded, letting go of Julian’s henley to stare up at the emergency hatch bolted into the center of the elevator’s ceiling panel.

Julian didn't answer. He kept his hand pinned to the emergency stop button, his eyes locked on the bolts of the hatch as they began to turn with a sharp, grinding screech. Someone was using a heavy industrial socket wrench from the shaft above.

With a loud pop, the central bolt gave way, and the heavy metal hatch swung downward into the cabin, hanging vertically by a single rusted hinge. A beam of harsh, white flashlight cut through the dim amber emergency lighting, illuminating the floating dust motes in the confined space.

"Federal marshals! Nobody move!" a gruff voice commanded from above.

A gloved hand reached down, gripping the edge of the opening, followed swiftly by the tactical vest and badge of a state investigator. He swung his legs through the hatch with practiced agility and dropped heavily onto the floor of the elevator car, landing right beside Marcus Vance. Two more armed deputies descended behind him, securing the perimeter of the cramped space.

"Hands where I can see them!" the lead investigator barked, his hand resting casually on the holster of his sidearm as his eyes swept over the group.

Eleanor’s face went chalk-white. She straightened her white blazer with trembling fingers, attempting to summon an aura of untouchable authority.

"I am Eleanor Vance," she said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts. "This is an egregious abuse of judicial power. We are executing a legal medical transfer under the direct supervision of certified hospital counsel."

The investigator didn't even look at her. He pulled a folded document from his utility pocket, flipped it open, and flashed it toward Marcus Vance.

"Marcus Vance, you are being detained as a material witness in an ongoing federal investigation into digital fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement," the investigator recited smoothly, snapping a pair of steel handcuffs onto the corporate lawyer’s wrists before Marcus could utter a single word of protest.

Marcus let out a sharp gasp as the cuffs clicked shut behind his back, his expensive charcoal suit jacket bunching up awkwardly around his shoulders. "You're making a catastrophic mistake. My firm represents half the state legislature."

"Your firm represents a shell corporation that’s been systematically looting dead men's estates for a decade," the investigator replied coldly, shoving Marcus toward the open hatch where a secure lift line was waiting above.

Julian finally released the red emergency stop button. The elevator car shuddered violently, sliding down six inches before locking back into place, but the doors slid open automatically with a gentle chime, revealing the brightly lit third-floor corridor lined with half a dozen state troopers and medical personnel.

The nurse, who had remained silently pressed against the back corner of the elevator during the entire confrontation, burst into tears, sliding down the wall until she sat flat on the floor.

Julian ignored them all. He immediately stepped past the marshals and placed his hands on the rolling rails of his mother’s hospital bed, leaning down to check her pulse.

Martha’s eyes fluttered open. She looked up at her son, a weak, knowing smile touching the corners of her dry lips.

"You found it... didn't you?" she whispered so softly that only Julian could hear.

Julian nodded, a tight lump forming in his throat. "I found it, Mom. It's almost over."

May you like

Before Martha could reply, Eleanor Vance leaned in past a state trooper, her voice hissing like a striking viper right into Julian's ear.
