Chapter 5 - The Restricted Call

The phone vibrated against Julian’s palm with a persistence that felt almost aggressive. He stared at the glowing screen, watching the caller ID display a stark, chilling warning: RESTRICTED NUMBER. The timestamp on his encrypted messaging app confirmed that his data package had successfully bypassed the local firewalls and landed directly on the secure server of the state attorney general’s special investigations unit.
Julian pressed the accept button and held the phone to his ear, keeping his back turned to the door of Room 312 where Eleanor and Marcus Vance were supervising the transfer of his mother.
"Mr. Hill?" a deep, gravelly voice asked on the other end of the line. The tone was clipped, formal, carrying the distinct cadence of a federal investigator who had spent too many decades dealing with corporate corruption. "This is Investigator Vance—no relation to the party you’re currently dealing with. We just decrypted the server logs you uploaded from St. Jude’s main terminal."
Julian let out a slow, controlled breath, leaning his shoulder against the side of the humming vending machine. "And?"
"And what you’ve provided corroborates a pattern of systemic asset diversion across three different private healthcare facilities in this county," the investigator replied, papers rustling faintly in the background. "The digital signature used to alter your mother’s restriction directive matches an administrative override key stolen from a regional health board database last month. But Mr. Hill... you triggered a tripwire when you sent this."
Julian’s eyes darted down the hallway. Eleanor and Marcus were pushing Martha’s bed out of Room 312, the wheels squeaking loudly against the floor. The nurse walked beside them, holding the IV drip bag steady.
"What kind of tripwire?" Julian asked, his voice tightening.
"The moment your upload hit our secure portal, an automated counter-script was executed on the hospital’s mainframe," the investigator said urgently. "They didn't just alter your mother’s medical file; they’ve initiated a complete remote wipe of every local backup on the third-floor server stack. If they wipe the physical hard drives in the nurses' station before my deputies arrive with a search warrant, you will lose the chain of custody for the financial trail."
Julian spun around. The hospital transfer team was already approaching the elevators at the end of the hall. The two security guards were lagging behind, scanning the corridor with watchful eyes, clearly looking for him.
"How long do your deputies need to get to the hospital?" Julian asked, taking a quiet step out of the alcove.
"At least twelve minutes," the investigator said. "Traffic on the bridge is backed up due to an accident. You need to delay that transfer, Mr. Hill. Do whatever you have to do to keep them on this floor, or the evidence vanishes forever."
The call clicked dead with a sharp tone. Julian stared at the dark screen of his phone. Twelve minutes. He looked down the hall. The elevator doors had slid open with a soft chime, and Marcus Vance was already holding the rubber safety bumper, gesturing for the nurse and Eleanor to wheel the hospital bed inside the car.
Julian didn't hesitate. He broke into a fast, purposeful stride down the linoleum corridor, ignoring the shouting warnings of the security guards as he sprinted directly toward the open elevator doors.
"Stop right there, Mr. Hill!" the larger security guard yelled, lunging forward to tackle him around the waist just as Julian reached the threshold of the elevator cab.

Julian threw his weight forward, using the guard's momentum against him, and crashed heavily into the back wall of the elevator panel, his hand slamming violently down on the red emergency stop button.
