Chapter 12 - The Black SUV

The roar of the SUV’s engine bounced off the concrete walls of the subterranean garage like rolling thunder. The vehicle didn't slow down as it careened down the ramp, its headlights cutting blinding streaks through the damp air before it slammed to a halt sideways, blocking the exit ramp completely.

Julian shoved Clara behind his back, his eyes locked on the driver's side door as it swung open.

Marcus Vance stepped out, his expensive charcoal suit jacket wrinkled and stained, his hands free of the handcuffs that state marshals had placed on him less than an hour ago. Behind him, two men in generic dark security uniforms stepped out of the back doors, their hands resting heavy on the utility belts at their waists.

"Impressive family reunion," Marcus sneered, his voice dripping with venom as he stalked across the concrete toward them. "I have to hand it to you, Julian. You're far more resilient than your old man. But breaking into a bank vault after hours isn't going to save your mother, and it certainly isn't going to save you."

"How did you get out of custody?" Clara demanded, stepping out from behind Julian, her voice sharp and steady as she stared down the corporate lawyer.

Marcus let out a short, mocking laugh. "Custody? Clara, sweet aunt Clara, do you really think a local magistrate is going to hold the primary financial benefactor of his re-election campaign over some fabricated server logs? The state investigator who detained me received a very polite phone call from the federal prosecutor’s office five minutes after we left the hospital. I was released before I even reached the precinct desk."

Julian stepped forward, putting himself squarely between Marcus and the open vault door. "You're trespassing on federal banking property, Marcus. The moment we step through that door, the vault's automated security system logs every digital entry directly to the federal reserve server. You can't touch us here."

Marcus stopped ten feet away, his expression hardening into absolute ice. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy black remote control with a single glowing red LED light at its center.

"You think federal servers matter when the building’s local power grid is about to suffer a catastrophic failure?" Marcus asked, his thumb resting over the red button on the remote. "One click of this button, and the entire block loses power. The bank's backup generator will take three minutes to kick in. In those three minutes, the vault’s biometric seal locks permanently from the outside, trapping whatever is inside in a vacuum-sealed tomb forever. And by the time power returns tomorrow morning, your mother will have passed away quietly at Beacon Ridge Hospice, and this trust will have legally defaulted to Vance Holdings."

Julian felt every muscle in his body tense. He looked past Marcus toward the open vault door. The dark interior stretched out into a long corridor lined with hundreds of metal safety deposit boxes, the red ledger waiting at the very end.

"You wouldn't dare," Clara whispered, her face pale. "The collateral damage—"

"Collateral is just a spreadsheet term, Clara," Marcus interrupted, his thumb pressing down halfway onto the red button. "Julian, hand me the key. Right now. Or I plunge this entire financial district into darkness, and your family's history gets buried permanently."

Julian looked down at the brass key in his palm, then up at Marcus’s manic, desperate eyes. He knew Marcus wasn't bluffing; a man who would murder by prescription would not hesitate to b
