Chapter 8: The Aftermath in the Kitchen

Downstairs, the splashing of water had stopped. Arthur let go of Sarah’s wrist as if touching her burned him, and he turned and strode out of the office, taking the stairs two at a time. The house felt heavier now, stripped of the digital illusion that had poisoned its walls for half a year. When he reached the kitchen, Lily was sitting on the wooden stepstool, her small head resting against her knees, the heavy mop leaning precariously against the counter beside her. She looked utterly exhausted, drained of the vibrant energy every child deserved to possess. Arthur walked over, knelt down on the cold tile floor without a care for his clothes, and gently gathered the little girl into his arms. Lily didn't startle; she simply melted into his embrace, her small arms wrapping around his neck with a desperate, clinging strength that broke his heart all over again. "I'm sorry, Daddy," she whispered into his shoulder, her voice thick with fatigue. "I tried to keep the house clean like Mommy said. I didn't want the people on the computer to yell at her." Arthur closed his eyes, fresh tears burning behind his eyelids. "You never have to clean this house again, sweetheart," he murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her brown hair. "None of it was your job. You are a little girl, and your only job is to play, learn, and be happy. I am so, so sorry I didn't see it sooner." Footsteps sounded softly behind them as Sarah descended the stairs, standing at the edge of the kitchen with her arms wrapped around herself, watching them with a defeated, hollow expression. She didn't try to defend herself anymore. The digital community that had sustained her delusion was gone, cut off by the stroke of a key, and the stark reality of what she had traded for online validation and quick cash stood exposed in the harsh fluorescent light of the kitchen. Arthur looked up at his wife over Lily’s small shoulder. "Pack a bag," he said quietly. "You're staying at a hotel tonight. When morning comes, we will figure out the next steps, but you are not staying under the same roof as our daughter for one more second." Sarah opened her mouth as if to argue, but one look at Arthur’s unyielding gaze silenced her. She turned around and walked slowly back up the stairs, the sound of her footsteps fading into the quiet night.
