Chapter 12: Sarah’s Counter-Move

Two days later, the illusion of a quiet, cooperative separation shattered completely. Arthur was sitting at the dining table reviewing school permission slips when a loud, aggressive knock echoed from the front porch. Before he could stand up, the door swung open—Sarah had retained her spare key—and she strode into the hallway, flanked by a tall, sharp-featured attorney in a charcoal suit. Sarah looked frantic, her hair unbrushed, wearing the same beige sweater from the day of the discovery, her eyes wild with a desperate, manic energy. "You can't do this, Arthur!" Sarah shouted, her voice echoing off the hardwood floors as she marched into the dining room. "You can't just lock me out of my own home and keep my daughter away from me! I filed emergency counter-motions this morning. I'm her mother!" Arthur stood up slowly, placing the papers down on the table, maintaining a calm, grounded posture that contrasted sharply with her explosive entry. He looked past Sarah at the unfamiliar attorney, then back to his wife. "Sarah, you broadcasted our six-year-old child doing heavy labor to hundreds of strangers online for profit. The court has already granted temporary sole custody based on the digital evidence I secured. You have no legal right to walk into this house uninvited." The opposing attorney stepped forward, flashing a quick, practiced smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Mr. Vance, my client deeply regrets the unconventional methods she used to manage her household responsibilities during a period of high financial stress. However, she is seeking immediate supervised visitation and mediation before this goes to a messy public trial that could severely impact your daughter's psychological well-being." Arthur narrowed his eyes. The sheer hypocrisy of the lawyer’s statement—attributing child exploitation to "unconventional methods of managing household responsibilities"—made his blood boil. But he remembered his own lawyer’s advice: stay calm, let the documentation speak, and never engage in a shouting match. "My daughter's psychological well-being is the only reason I am standing here," Arthur said, his voice entirely steady. "If you want visitation, you will take it through the family court mediator, strictly according to the judge's terms. Right now, I must ask you to leave my property before I call the sheriff to enforce the restraining order." Sarah stared at him, her mouth opening and closing as she realized that the mild-mannered husband she had manipulated for years was entirely gone, replaced by a resolute father who could no longer be intimidated.
