Chapter 5: The Midnight Labor Revealed

Arthur shadowed his daughter through the darkened corridors like a ghost, keeping himself hidden behind the heavy velvet drapes of the parlor. Lily moved with the practiced efficiency of a seasoned professional, entirely unbothered by the darkness. She carried the heavy plastic bucket to the kitchen sink, filled it with warm water and a harsh chemical cleaner, and dragged a small wooden stepstool over to the base cabinets. Arthur watched from the doorway, his chest tightening with every breath. The pungent smell of ammonia hit his nose, a clear indicator of the industrial-strength products Sarah had been purchasing in bulk. Lily climbed onto the stool, her small arms straining as she began scrubbing the greasy grease-traps behind the stove, a task that required adult leverage and protective gloves—gloves she was not wearing. Her bare hands were red and raw, the skin around her fingernails cracked and bleeding. Arthur’s hands curled into tight fists at his sides, his fingernails biting painfully into his palms. He wanted to rush forward, sweep her up in his arms, and carry her back to bed, but a deeper, chilling instinct told him to wait, to see just how deep this depravity went. Who had taught a six-year-old to clean industrial appliances at two in the morning? The answer, he knew, lay behind the closed door of the master bedroom upstairs. As Lily moved on to mop the kitchen floor with a heavy, water-logged string mop that was twice her size, Arthur quietly slipped past her and made his way back to the stairs. He didn't stop until he reached the second-floor landing. The door to Sarah’s studio room—the space she claimed was her private office for freelance writing—was locked. Arthur pressed his ear against the heavy oak paneling. From inside, the unmistakable sound of soft jazz music played at a low volume, mingled with the rhythmic clicking of computer keys. Sarah wasn't sleeping; she was working, insulated from the domestic reality below by thick walls and closed doors, content to let her child sacrifice her sleep and health to maintain an impossible standard of perfection. Arthur gripped the brass doorknob, twisted it with all his might, and found it firmly bolted from the inside.
