Chapter 5 - The Voice from the Past

The name hung in the damp air like a physical blow. Julian Vance’s polite, calculated composure vanished in a fraction of a second, replaced by a dark, dangerous flash in his dark eyes. He whipped his head down toward the glowing screen of the smartphone resting in the boy's lap.

"Is that your grandmother on the line?" Julian hissed, his hand shooting out like a striking viper to snatch the phone right out of Leo’s small fingers.

"Hey! Give that back!" Leo cried out, trying to scramble forward, but Julian casually shoved him back against the brick wall with one firm hand against his chest.

Julian brought the phone up to his ear, his voice dripping with venom. "Clara. What a delightfully stubborn ghost from the past. I thought you had retired to that quiet little cottage in the suburbs to knit in peace."

"Put my grandson inside where it's warm right this second, Julian, or I swear to God I will call the federal marshals and hand over every single bank statement I’ve been archiving for the past three years," Clara’s voice roared back through the speaker, fierce and unyielding, carrying the unmistakable weight of a woman who had nothing left to lose.

Inside the penthouse, Elena stood up abruptly from the sofa, knocking over a crystal decanter that shattered against the floor with a sharp, violent crack. She rushed toward the balcony door, her face twisted in absolute panic.

"Julian, no! Give me the phone!" Elena screamed, lunging forward and grabbing Julian’s sleeve. "You can't talk to her! If Clara comes up here with those documents, we are finished! Everything we built is gone!"

Julian shoved Elena back with a harsh, impatient motion, sending her stumbling against the velvet sofa. He didn't break eye contact with the phone as he listened to Clara’s furious tirade. A cold, calculating smirk returned to his lips, though his eyes remained dead and calculating.

"Your little files won't save you, Clara," Julian spoke smoothly into the microphone. "Elena signed the transfer papers ten minutes ago. Legally, contractually, and irrevocably, this property and everything attached to it belongs to Horizon Holdings now. That includes the trust fund. That includes this penthouse. And, as a matter of fact, according to the temporary guardianship clause filed with family court yesterday afternoon..."

Julian paused, letting the silence stretch out agonizingly long to maximize the terror in the old woman's heart.

"...your daughter has legally surrendered primary custody of young Leo to our corporate holdings as collateral for her multi-million-dollar default."

On the balcony, Leo let out a sharp, breathless gasp. The cold wind seemed to vanish, replaced by an overwhelming, suffocating emptiness. He looked up at his mother, who had fallen to her knees on the shattered glass inside the living room, her hands covering her face as silent, ragged sobs finally broke through her frozen exterior.

"You... you gave me away?" Leo whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words.

Before Elena could answer, the shrill, distinct sound of a police siren echoed faintly from the street far below, cutting through the rainy night air like a knife.

Julian’s smile vanished instantly. He dropped the smartphone onto the concrete floor, crushing the screen beneath the heel of his polished shoe with a sickening crunch.

"Looks like we have uninvited guests," Julian muttered, grabbing the heavy leather briefcase from the coffee table. He turned toward the private elevator at the back of the penthouse, leaving the sliding door wide open to the freezing rain. "Come along, Elena. We’re leaving through the service stairs."
