Chapter 12 - The Courthouse Steps at Dawn

The first pale streaks of grey dawn cut through the smoggy skyline of the downtown financial district, painting the imposing marble pillars of the federal courthouse in a cold, austere light. Clara’s sedan pulled smoothly up to the grand stone staircase, the tires hissing against the damp asphalt of the empty plaza.
Leo stirred in the passenger seat, rubbing his tired eyes as he looked up at the towering bronze doors of the building. The plaza was completely deserted at this early hour, save for a solitary security guard drinking coffee near the entrance.
"Grandma, is this where the police work?" Leo asked softly, smoothing down the rumpled fabric of his light blue pajamas.
"Not the police, sweetheart. The people who make sure powerful men like Julian Vance can't hide behind contracts and shell companies anymore," Clara replied, turning off the engine and pulling the ignition key.
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a heavy, water-damaged manila folder—the one she had managed to grab from the front hallway bench before fleeing her home. Inside rested the physical evidence of every transaction, every fraudulent transfer, and every coerced signature that connected Horizon Holdings to the systematic destruction of her family's estate.
As Clara opened her car door, a sleek black sedan pulled up silently behind them, blocking their exit from the lane.
Clara froze, her hand hovering over the door handle. Her eyes darted to the side mirror.
The tinted window of the black sedan rolled down slowly, revealing the sharp, unblinking gaze of Julian Vance. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; his shirt sleeves were rolled up, and his expression was no longer polite or calculated. It was the face of a cornered predator ready to strike.
"Stay in the car, Leo," Clara whispered fiercely, locking all the doors from her master console. "Do not roll down the window for any reason. If anyone approaches, honk the horn."
"Grandma, don't go out there!" Leo cried out, his voice cracking with sudden panic as he grabbed her arm. "He's dangerous!"
"I have to, Leo. He won't let us walk through those doors unless I stop him here," Clara said, pulling her arm away with a gentle, resolute pat on his cheek.
She pushed open her door and stepped out onto the cold stone plaza, the morning wind catching the hem of her coat as she stood tall against the towering marble steps. Julian stepped out of his vehicle as well, closing his car door with a heavy, deliberate thud that echoed off the empty facades of the financial buildings.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Clara," Julian called out, his deep voice carrying easily across the open space as he walked slowly toward her, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets. "You can't fight a corporation like Horizon. The courts are built on precedent, and our paperwork is entirely airtight."
"Your paperwork was forged by a desperate woman under duress," Clara fired back, her voice ringing out clear and steady across the plaza. "And I have the original foundation ledgers sitting right here in my hand to prove every single felony you've committed over the past decade."
Julian stopped walking about ten feet away from her, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. He didn't look worried. In fact, his eyes gleamed with a chilling satisfaction.
"You think those ledgers matter, Clara?" Julian laughed softly, shaking his head. "Look behind you."
