Chapter 2 - The Midnight Rescue and the Whispered Warning

The phone receiver hummed with static as Clara listened to her grandson’s shivering voice crack through the speaker. She sat up straight in her bed in the quiet suburbs, throwing off the heavy patchwork quilt. The digital clock on her nightstand glowed a harsh 11:45 PM.

"She went to a big party, Grandma," Leo whispered into the dark, his teeth chattering so hard he could barely form the words. "I spilled some juice on her sparkly dress by mistake. She got really mad and shoved me outside onto the balcony. The door is locked from the inside, and she won't answer my knocks."

Clara’s heart seized in her chest. She swung her legs over the side of the mattress, her bare feet searching blindly for her slippers on the cold hardwood floor. A familiar, cold dread washed over her. She knew Elena’s temper was volatile, fueled by years of unchecked ambition and a desperate need for social perfection, but leaving a seven-year-old child outside in the freezing autumn wind crossed a line that terrified her.

"Listen to me very carefully, Leo," Clara said, her voice dropping into a steady, authoritative tone designed to calm his panic. "Do you have your heavy jacket out there?"

"No, Grandma. Just my pajamas," Leo sobbed softly, pulling his arms tight around his thin torso to conserve body heat. "It’s so cold out here. My feet are freezing against the concrete."

"Stay right by the living room window, honey. Wrap yourself in that patio furniture cover if you can find it. I am getting in my car right now. I have the spare electronic key fob for her building’s parking garage, but it’s going to take me at least forty minutes to drive across the city. Do not bang on the glass anymore. Just stay out of the wind."

"Hurry, Grandma. Please," Leo pleaded, a fresh wave of tears spilling over his eyelashes. "I hear voices inside. Mom is talking to someone."

Clara stopped halfway to her closet, her hand freezing on the doorknob. "Voices? Who is she talking to, Leo? Is there a man with her?"

"I don't know," the boy replied, pressing his ear closer to the sliding glass door. "She sounds angry, but she’s whispering. She said something about... about the insurance policy and the safety deposit box."

Clara dropped her car keys onto the floorboards with a sharp metallic clatter. The alarm bells in her head began to deafen her. Elena had never kept secrets about money unless that money was tied to something deeply illegal. She snatched the keys back up, her hands trembling as she bolted toward the front door.

"Leo, stay on the line with me," Clara commanded, gripping her cell phone tightly as she flung open her front door and sprinted toward her sedan. "Don't hang up. Tell me every single word you hear her say through that glass."
