Chapter 5 - The Blue-Eyed Heir

The confession hung in the air between them, stripped of all artifice, brutal and absolute. Julian stared at his wife across the expanse of the dark library, the mahogany shelves looming like silent judges over their shattered marriage. The woman standing before him in the long red dress no longer looked like the elegant socialite he had married in a sun-drenched ceremony in Napa Valley; she was a stranger wearing a familiar face, a master tactician who had played a long, calculating game with his name, his estate, and his heart.

“How long?” Julian’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried the weight of a thunderclap in the quiet room.

Victoria crossed her arms over her chest, the deep V-neck of her dress shifting slightly as she tilted her chin upward with an air of defiant pride. “From the very beginning, Julian. Your father’s will stipulated that the Vance fortune could only be inherited by a direct bloodline heir with a proven pedigree. You were sterile from the mumps you had at age twelve—did you really think I didn't check your medical files before we signed the prenuptial agreement?”

Julian felt the room tilt on its axis. The medical records. His father had insisted on complete transparency, but Julian had trusted Victoria implicitly during their courtship. He had never suspected that his private health history had been weaponized against him before they even walked down the aisle.

“And the boy?” Julian choked out, the word tasting like ash on his tongue. “Leo? Who is his real father?”

“A man who didn't care about corporate mergers or stock portfolios,” Victoria said coldly, turning her back to walk toward the leaded windows overlooking the rain-slicked gardens. “A man who gave me what you never could: passion, risk, and a child who looks at the world with wonder instead of a balance sheet.”

“Then why stay here?” Julian demanded, taking a step toward her. “Why trap yourself in this marble cage with a man you despise?”

Victoria stopped, her silhouette framed against the lightning flashing outside the glass. She didn't turn around, but her shoulders shook with a silent, bitter laugh.

“Because the Vance name buys immunity, Julian,” she whispered, turning her head just enough to look at him with half-lidded, venomous eyes. “And because your father didn't leave the estate to you—he left it in a trust managed jointly by you and his legal heirs. Leo is the key to the entire empire. And until he turns twenty-one, I control the key.”

Before Julian could process the full scope of her betrayal, a sharp, frantic knocking echoed from the heavy oak doors of the library, followed by the sound of Mrs. Gable sobbing hysterically.

“Mr. Vance! Mr. Vance, please!” the housekeeper screamed through the wood. “It’s Master Leo! He’s gone! He’s not in his room, and the side garden gate is wide open!”
