Chapter 15 - The Final Melody

The absolute darkness of the hospital room was broken only by the rhythmic, emerald pulse of the heart monitor casting long, dancing shadows across the white walls. Julian stepped instinctively in front of the hospital bed, his fists clenched at his sides as he strained his eyes against the gloom. Sheriff Miller leveled his service pistol toward the open doorway, the metal glinting faintly in the dim light.

“Identify yourself or open fire!” the sheriff barked, his voice echoing sharply down the sterile corridor outside.

A soft, low hum drifted into the room from the hallway—a haunting, melodic cadence that Julian recognized with a sickening lurch in his stomach. It was the secret song. The exact lullaby Leo had whispered about in the opulent marble hallway hours ago.

A tall silhouette stepped across the threshold, framed by the pale emergency lighting of the hallway behind them. It was Martha—or rather, Dr. Martha Sterling—no longer wearing the dust-stained maid’s apron, but dressed in a sharp, tailored black trench coat that mirrored the lethal precision of her movements. She wasn't holding a weapon; instead, her hands were empty and relaxed at her sides as she took two slow steps into the room.

“You’re too late, Julian,” Martha said, her voice devoid of the warmth she had feigned while scrubbing the baseboards of the estate. It was cold, clinical, and absolute. “The boy’s DNA was modified three years ago in a Zurich laboratory. The song isn't a lullaby—it’s an acoustic trigger designed to activate the dormant genetic markers in his bloodline. He belongs to the syndicate now, legally and biologically.”

“Not while I’m breathing,” Julian growled, lunging forward with a speed born of pure paternal desperation.
