Chapter 1 - The Echo of Authority

The grand double wooden doors of the foyer remained wide open, letting in the sharp autumn draft that rustled the crystal pendants of the chandelier overhead. Victoria stood rigid in her long red dress, the deep V-neck catching the harsh glare of the overhead lights. Her dark wavy hair was pinned into an immaculate knot, though a single strand had broken free, dancing near her cheek as she glared down at the kneeling figure of Martha. The maid’s black dress and white apron were dust-stained from scrubbing the baseboards, yet her posture remained remarkably composed despite the humiliation.
“Fire her now, Julian,” Victoria said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute authority that brooked no argument.
Julian, towering beside his six-year-old son Leo, stepped fully into the marble hallway. His dark suit was tailored to perfection, but a familiar crease of fatigue lined his brow. Leo gripped his father’s sleeve tightly, his small knuckles white against the dark fabric.
“No, daddy. Don’t make her leave,” Leo whispered, his eyes wide and shimmering with unshed tears as he looked up at his father’s stern profile.
Julian glanced down at his son, surprised by the raw desperation in the boy’s usually quiet voice. Before Julian could process the plea, Leo broke away, running blindly across the slippery marble floor. He crashed straight into the arms of the maid, burying his face in her white apron as Martha wrapped her arms around him, her shoulders shaking silently.
“She sings us the secret song,” Leo sobbed into the fabric.
Julian froze, his dark eyes narrowing in sudden, genuine confusion. He looked at the trembling boy, then at the weeping maid.
“The secret song?” Julian asked, his voice tightening with a mixture of shock and incomprehension.
Victoria’s elegant facade fractured instantly. Her face drained of color, her mouth falling slightly open in a look of sheer, unadulterated panic that she tried and failed to conceal. Julian turned his gaze from the boy to his wife, his expression hardening into a terrifying intensity as he stepped closer to her.
“How does he know that song, Victoria?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking with a sudden, dangerous agitation.
Victoria stepped back, her heel clicking sharply against the marble. “He doesn't know anything, Julian. It's just childish nonsense.”

“It’s not nonsense,” Martha whispered, finally looking up from the floor with eyes that held a lifetime of warning. “He knows because the walls have ears, Mr. Vance—and someone has been singing the truth in the dark.”
