Chapter 14: The Vigil of the Creek

On a clear, warm evening in late September, when the autumn dusk was painting the sky in shades of violet, amber, and molten gold, Elena and Nathan walked out to the edge of the millpond.

Down in the shallows, five-year-old Thomas was wading with a wooden toy boat, his bright, happy laughter drifting across the calm water on the evening breeze.

Across the pond, the warm incandescent lights of the apprentice cottages flickered on, casting a golden glow across the gardens where young weavers and sawyers were sharing evening supper on the porch.

Nathan wrapped his strong arm around Elena’s waist, pulling her close against the cooling evening air.

Elena leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, unhurried rhythm of his heart and the deep, eternal murmur of the rushing water.

""Do you remember the dressing room in Westchester, Nathan?"" Elena asked softly, watching the first evening stars appear over the mountain ridges.

""I remember the day you came back to Rhinebeck, Elena,"" Nathan replied gently, kissing her hair.

""I was so close to believing that my worth was decided by the people who owned the silk,"" Elena whispered, touching the white oak ring on her finger.

Nathan turned her gently, looking into her clear dark eyes with unshakeable reverence.

""No one owns the silk, Elena,"" Nathan said softly. ""It belongs to the hands that weave it with an honest heart.""
