In late October, the town of Crozet dedicated *The Arthur Vance Memorial Covered Bridge*—a 130-foot heavy-timber span crossing the Mechums River to connect the apprentice academy directly to the regional public school research gardens.
The bridge was built entirely of native white oak harvested through sustainable forest thinning, framed by Nathan, Bradley, and the apprentice crew, and pinned with over one thousand hand-carved locust trunnels.
On a brilliant, crisp Saturday morning, five hundred citizens gathered at the riverbank for the dedication ceremony.
Clara and Nathan walked to the entrance of the bridge, holding hands with Lily, Thomas, and little Caleb skipping between them.
Thirteen-year-old Lily stepped forward, holding Barnaby the rabbit in her left arm and a pair of bronze ceremonial shears in her right.
She looked at her mother, then at Nathan, and finally at Bradley standing proudly among the sawyers.
""The crossing is open, neighbors!"" Lily announced, her clear voice ringing strong and true across the rushing water. ""Walk together!""
