Chapter 13: The Archival Fellowship
In late November, the University of Virginia held a special academic convocation in Charlottesville to dedicate *The Clara Thorne-Vance Center for Appalachian Heritage Arts & Rural Ecology.*
The auditorium was filled with hundreds of textile historians, conservation directors, and botanical scientists from across the nation.
Clara walked to the podium dressed in a simple, tailored navy wool dress she had hand-woven herself, carrying the vintage 1880 wooden flying shuttle she had used to weave her first master tapestry.
She set the shuttle on the oak lectern, looking out over the assembly with quiet, humble grace.
""We live in an era that often teaches us that wealth is measured by what we can take from others, how quickly we can consume, and how easily we can discard what is inconvenient,"" Clara spoke clearly to the crowd. ""We are told that love is a contract and the earth is just a resource to be exploited. But this guild was built on an older, truer foundation: that a human soul is made whole only when we learn how to create shelter for the vulnerable, honor the living earth, and forgive those who have lost their way in the dark.""
She pointed to the magnificent hand-woven tapestries hanging along the auditorium walls.
""When you weave with honest thread, the cloth holds. When you tell the truth, the ground holds you. There is no other foundation that will stand.""
