Chapter 9

The digital terminal built into the corner of the makeshift studio buzzed softly, a low, electronic chime that broke the scratch of Elena’s brush against the vellum. She glanced over her shoulder. The screen, which had remained locked on static topographic maps for hours, flickered. A command prompt window opened automatically, blinking a green cursor against a black background. Someone was attempting to establish an external connection through the facility’s secure intranet—an unauthorized ping originating from outside the bunker’s firewall.

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She set her brush down carefully on the wooden edge of the drafting board, wiping a smudge of black ink from her thumb onto the fabric of her grey sweatpants. She stepped away from the table, moving cautiously toward the terminal. The guards outside the heavy door hadn't reacted, which meant the firewall intrusion was sophisticated enough to bypass their internal security alerts. It was a ghost in the machine, slipping through the digital architecture the same way she had slipped physical clues into the gallery painting.

She reached out and tapped the spacebar on the physical keyboard. The blinking cursor vanished, replaced by a line of text rendered in a clean, sans-serif font: VANCE, E. STATUS?

Elena leaned in close to the screen, her breath fogging the glass slightly. She didn't type her name. Instead, she entered a specific numerical sequence—the catalog number of the ruined canvas from the gallery exhibition, followed by the coordinates of the old municipal archive where she had first uncovered the corporate conspiracy six months ago. It was a secure handshaking protocol she had established with Marcus Cole, an investigative journalist who had spent the last year digging into Julian Sterling’s real estate acquisitions.

The screen flickered again, scrolling a rapid cascade of data packets. FILES RECEIVED, the text replied. ATTORNEY GENERAL BRIEFING SCHEDULED FOR 0800 HOURS. POLICE RAID ON SUBTERRANEAN ACCESS POINTS CONFIRMED. GET OUT BEFORE DAWN.

A cold wave of relief washed over her, instantly followed by a sharp spike of anxiety. Marcus had the files. The federal authorities were moving in earlier than expected. But getting out of this subterranean bunker before dawn was an entirely different logistical nightmare. Even if she finished the altered blueprint to satisfy Arthur Vance, the guards stationed outside her door would never simply let her walk out into the night air. They were trained security operatives protecting a multi-billion-dollar illegal operation; letting a witness walk free was simply not part of their operational protocol.

A sudden, heavy thud echoed from down the hallway, followed by the muffled sound of shouting and the sharp, unmistakable crack of a suppressed firearm.

Elena spun around from the terminal, her eyes wide. The low-frequency hum of the facility’s ventilation system abruptly cut out, plunging the concrete corridor into an eerie, suffocating quiet. The emergency lighting flickered, shifting from bright white to a dull, pulsing amber glow. The raid had started. Marcus’s contacts hadn't waited for morning; the federal agencies were moving on the facility right now, turning Julian Sterling’s secure underground empire into a combat zone.
