Chapter 10

The heavy steel door of the makeshift studio shuddered violently as something heavy slammed against the exterior bulkhead. The electronic keypad on the wall sparked, showering a cascade of bright blue electrical embers across the concrete floor before going completely dead. Elena backed away from the drafting board, her hands clenching into tight fists inside the pockets of her hoodie. The illusion of controlled corporate containment was shattering in real time. Outside in the hallway, the sound of shouting tactical teams and the heavy thud of combat boots drowned out the distant hum of the facility’s dying generators.
With a deafening screech of stressed metal, the door’s pneumatic hinges gave way. The heavy steel slab crashed inward, landing flat on the floor with a cloud of dust and pulverized concrete. Through the smoking doorway stepped two figures in matte-black tactical gear, their faces concealed behind reinforced ceramic helmets and night-vision visors. They swept their submachine guns across the room in a fluid, practiced motion, checking for hostile threats before lowering their barrels slightly upon spotting Elena standing alone near the drafting table.
“Elena Vance?” the lead operative barked through a filtered comms unit, his voice clipped and authoritative.
“Yes,” she replied, her voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline roaring in her ears.
“Federal task force. We have an extraction order signed by the Attorney General. Move now—we don't have much time before Sterling’s secondary security detail rallies from the lower levels.”
Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed the modified vellum blueprint from the drafting board, rolling it up swiftly and sliding it into a cardboard tube before following the tactical team out into the corridor. The hallway was a scene of absolute chaos. Wisps of white fire-suppression smoke drifted lazily across the ceiling, mixing with the acrid smell of gunpowder and burnt wiring. Several of Julian’s black-suited guards were cuffed and face-down on the polished concrete floor, guarded by additional federal operatives securing the perimeter.
As they hurried toward the main descending access ramp, a familiar figure stepped out from a cross-corridor, blocked by a pair of armed federal agents. It was Arthur Vance. His impeccably tailored suit was rumpled, his tie loosened, and his face pale with a cold, impotent fury. He didn't look like a untouchable corporate executive anymore; he looked like a cornered rat realizing the walls were caving in. He locked eyes with Elena as the tactical team escorted her past him.
“You think this changes anything, Ms. Vance?” Arthur shouted over the din of the emergency klaxons wailing overhead. “You can raid this facility, you can seize every hard drive, but the foundation is already untouchable. Men like Julian Sterling don't go to prison.”
May you like
Elena stopped for a fraction of a second, turning her head to look back at him. Her bruised face was bathed in the harsh, rhythmic red and white glow of the overhead emergency strobes. “Men like you build your empires on stolen foundations, Arthur,” she said quietly, her voice cutting through the noise with chilling clarity. “And when the ground starts shaking, the foundation is always the first thing to collapse.”
Before Arthur could reply, the federal agent shoved her gently forward, urging her up the incline toward the surface exit and the waiting dawn.
